US steps up pressure on Pakistan to release American diplomat

Amid a diplomatic row over the arrest of a US diplomat for gunning down two Pakistanis in Punjab's provincial capital Lahore, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari today said Washington should wait for the court's decision on the American national.

Zardari told a visiting delegation of American Congressmen, who raised the controversial issue with the president that it would be "prudent" to wait for the legal course in the country.

The president said he appreciated the concern of the Congressmen "but the matter was already before the courts".

"It would be prudent to wait for the legal course to be completed," Zardari was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his office here.

Pakistani authorities have rejected a US demand for the release of Raymond Davis, who was arrested after he shot and killed two youths whom he alleged were trying to rob him in a busy commercial area of Lahore on Thursday.

The Lahore High Court today sought a response from federal and provincial authorities to a petition that called for steps to ensure that Davis is not handed over to the US.

In the petition filed in the Lahore High Court, lawyer Saeed Zafar claimed efforts were underway to secure the release of the American and the government should be barred from giving him diplomatic immunity.

The American should be barred from leaving Pakistan by including his name in the Exit Control List, Zafar said.

Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, who heard the petition, issued notices to the federal Attorney General and the Assistant Advocate General of Punjab province, asking them to appear in court tomorrow and to submit their responses.

The police in Lahore registered a case against Davis for illegally carrying a weapon. The US national was armed with a Glock 9mm pistol.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif told reporters this morning that the federal government and the Foreign Office would decide whether Davis was entitled to diplomatic immunity.

"The matter is to be decided by the Foreign Office while the provincial government is responsible for the investigation (into the shooting incident according to the) law of the land," Sharif said.

All decisions regarding the American would be taken in light of the law and the Constitution and no compromise will be made in the investigation or legal matters, he said.

In a related development, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's office denied reports in a section of the media that the government had decided to give immunity to Davis and was pressuring authorities to free the American.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Secretariat described the news reports as "incorrect and fabricated".

The spokesperson said the federal government is "not putting any pressure (on authorities) to hand over Raymond Davis to America".

"It is absolutely untrue that the Prime Minister has exerted any influence for the release of Raymond Davis," the spokesperson said.

The American, currently in police custody, contended during a court appearance last week that he had acted in self-defence.

that's India, a white American can rape all the Indian women he wants but the Indian court will not prosecute him. as a matter of fact, they will invite him for dinner and escort him to his airport where he will fly safely back to the US.

imagine the US holding a leash and at the end of that leash is India. that's why India is powerless to do anything against the US and it's citizens.

Indians will be outraged but what can they do?

Warren Anderson was not released under pressure but was swapped for Adil Shahryar son of Muhammad Yunus was close to Gandhi .

Referring to a newspaper report, the BJP MP alleged that the Rajiv Gandhi Government had allowed Anderson to flee as a quid pro quo arrangement with the US on giving a presidential pardon to one Adil Shahryar, whose father Muhammad Yunus was close to Gandhi family. Adil, who was given a federal sentence of 35 years in prison for various crimes, was given a presidential pardon by US president Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1985.

Is there any possibility that the person can be handed over to the authorities in US and they could conduct an independent Judicial inquiry in an independent tribunal of there own , But thats a far fetched idea as i certainly have no hope for getting any sort of justice in US courts after seeing what they did to Afia siddiqui....!

There is already an anti-american revolution raising its head in Pakistan and the way american government is playing will further help the people to become more anti-america.they have to deal with ground reality and have been already told that the american ambassador who caught to be culprit should face the legal prosecution but the americans demand is other way around.this is a critical time, we have seen the public already pissed of from govt,in case the govt interfere in favor of american's we might see something big of a response from people and there will be a shift which will not be helpful for govt

But my gut feeling is he is going to be released soon due to the looters we have higher up the hierarchy

If this guy is released then Zardari Government is gone.I don't think he has diplomatic immunity because if he did then there would be many anti Pakistani Op-Ed's in New York Times, Washington Post etc and of course leaked sources from White House and State Department leaking Information.GOTUS are a bunch of hypocrites.Bhopal disaster killed thousands of people and US did nothing where as BP Gulf Disaster US literally raped BP.
