US State Department approves sale of 400 Harpoon coastal anti ship missiles to Taiwan

The State Department signaled its approval for a potential $2.4 billion sale of land-based anti-ship missiles to Taiwan, a move certain to anger Beijing and raise tensions further between the U.S. and China.

The Trump administration said in a statement Monday that it has notified Congress that it backs the proposed sale of as many as 100 Harpoon Coastal Defense Systems built by Boeing Co., which includes 400 land-based missiles.


The new Harpoons are intended to be launched from ground-mobile launchers, adding to Taiwan’s arsenal of air and submarine-launched Harpoons from earlier sales.

“The United States maintains an abiding interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and considers the security of Taiwan central to the security and stability of the broader Indo-Pacific region,” the State Department said in a statement.

The move comes as already-high tensions between the U.S. and China soar even higher. China said earlier that it would impose unspecified sanctions on Boeing’s defense unit, Lockheed Martin Corp. and Raytheon Technologies Corp. after the U.S. State Department approved $1.8 billion in arms sales to Taiwan last week and made a previous announcement of 66 new F-16 jets.

Harpoons have been upgraded over time and they also have sufficient range to defend against amphib invasion. Are they the most potent missiles in the US arsenal? No, but the US is selling 400 to Taiwan. Taiwan will simply mass fires against Chinese warships. Many will get through. 400 is a lot of missiles.

And? Many of those destroyers will be lucky to make it out of port once US bombers unload on China. US submarines will also be waiting. An the the US Army is modernizing its entire long range precision fires portfolio including antiship. It only gets harder from here for China.

What are they gonna do, launch the same short ranged Harpoons with a slower platform? Even LRASM only has 300 nm range and is solely integrated with the B-1. Easily intercepted by PL-15 armed planes.

Subs are gonna wait in the shallow East China Sea where corvettes with VDS and quieter electric subs have the advantage? They're gonna wait inside MPA and helicopter patrol range?

Wrong, LRASMs can be launched not just from B-1s, but also from B-52s, Super Hornets, ships, etc. And 300 nm range is good enough to stay outside the range of anti air missiles of the Chinese ships, unless you building 600km range anti air missiles to shoot down the aircraft platforms. And bombers won't fly alone with the F-35s and F-18s that will easily detect and shoot down your aircraft. So they will have to choose, either fight the fighters or take on the bombers.

Harpoon is outdated, it's like China selling YJ-83 missile. It has only the potential to threaten small targets like type 056 or American LCS.
