US signals end to Modi boycott, envoy Nancy Powell wants to meet him

OR, he could be an ADULT and show respect to an Ambassador.

" Reports suggest, however, that the US cannot offer a visa to Modi during the election campaign, as it might be accused of trying to influence Indian domestic politics. It has said in the recent past that he is free to apply for a visa, like any other applicant. "

So by offering visa to Modi during election campaign will be an act to influence Indian domestic politics ???

Only megalomaniac country like US will think that by giving Narendra Modi visa it is going to influence Indian domestic politics . and if that's true they should not be even be meeting him to avoid exerting any influence over Indian domestic politics .

These are the hypocrites of first order . They are desperate to get into good books of Narendra modi after a decade long humiliation extended to him . And at the same time they do not want to 'appear' desperate .
They will keep repeating official tag line - that Narendra Modi is free to apply for visa and await outcome of his application just anybody else . ( Read - please apply we are too desperate to give you one )

They deserve no respect besides the politeness and courtesies called for by the post they hold .

One must maintain decorum ....politeness and courtesies, yes ! ....respect ? for what ?

.
Well, US is in a sticky situation..

Maybe they did a favour to the ruling congress or maybe they did feel strongly for all that religious freedom stuff (I find hard to believe). However, they could have avoided this situation simply when SC appointed SIT gave Modi a clean chit.

By not doing so, they indeed provided some ammunition to Modi, esp when he is a probable candidate for the PM post.

What did I tell you? The US doesn't give two shits about what Modi may or may not have done, all they care about is exploiting India. If that means dealing with Modi, they'll do it.

US defends its stand on Powell-Modi meeting - The Times of India

WASHINGTON: The US sought to play down Thursday's meeting of ambassador Nancy Powell with Narendra Modi, saying it is part of increased engagement with Indian leaders and indicated that President Barack Obama may not have been involved in the decision to end the BJP leader's boycott.

The state department also scotched speculation about the meeting leading to the US lifting a nine-year-long visa ban on Modi in the wake of the 2002 Gujarat riots, insisting that there was no change in its visa policy.

Washington also made it clear that it was not taking any position on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Justifying Powell's meeting with Modi, state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said all relevant people required to take a decision were involved in the process.

However, the official did not confirm if President Obama or secretary of state John Kerry were involved in it.

"These decisions don't always rise up to every highest level. But certainly, all relevant individuals who needed to weigh in weighed in, and agreed that it was certainly an appropriate meeting to have," Psaki told reporters.

"We are often engaged in concentrated outreach to senior political and business leaders. We began doing that months ago, if not years ago — in different scales, of course — to highlight and continue our US-India relationship. There has been no change in our policy per se. This is an effort in that engagement," Psaki said.

Powell is expected to travel to Gandhinagar to meet Modi on Thursday, the first by the top US diplomat after the post-Godhra riots. In the last few years, several European allies have met Modi.

"We do broad outreach with a range of officials in India and many countries around the world with different backgrounds. And it's simply just an example of that," she said.
Reiterating that the US does not take positions in elections of any country, Psaki argued that Powell meeting Modi is not an example of the US taking a position.

"We don't take positions. So no, it wouldn't be a reflection of that. It is just a reflection, as I've stated a few times, of us reaching out to a range of individuals from different backgrounds, different political affiliations, which we do in countries around the world," she said.

Psaki said there is no change in the US visa policy. "When individuals apply for a visa, their applications are reviewed in accordance with US law and policy. This is not a reflection of any change ... This is simply a meeting happening on the ground in India. It's not a reflection of anything else than outreach to a broad range of officials," she said.

Responding to questions, Psaki refuted the allegations that this decision of the Administration is influenced by the lobbying efforts of some pro-Modi group and business community in the US.

She said it was certainly not a reflection of anything changing regarding America's longstanding and strong advocacy for human rights around the world.

. However, they could have avoided this situation simply when SC appointed SIT gave Modi a clean chit.

Indeed, the stance they have taken is totally indefensible- they have, in effect, refuted the findings of India's highest court or at the very least not respected its rulings and have come to their own conclusions. By the same token couldn't India boycott the likes of Obama and G W. Bush for the war crimes they, arguably, could be accused of? I mean even if there is no actual case against them- it would be just as arbitrary as what the US did.

But now, they have backed themselves into a tricky corner- and they know it. There's no way they can afford to have the next PM of India to be on poor terms with them from day one. No matter how much they will deny it and try to trivialise their change of stance- they ARE making a humiliating U-turn and it shows that a) they don't give two hoots about human rights- only when it suits them to pay lip service b) their stance on Modi has always been wrong and he should never have been banned in the first place. It's quite a predicament the US finds themselves in, good luck getting them to admit it though- they will use nonsensical statements filled with bs terminology to justify this but will never actually ever admit they were wrong.

Modi is an opportunist too , just like US itself .

BJP seemed to desperate to get US onboard , given the various media bites appearing since last few days .

Frankly speaking Modi had no reason to meet the ambassador ..but he will try to use this towards his advantage .

It is rather sad that still people need to show off seal of approval by Uncle Sam ....such is the clout of US.

Modi set conditions ???
and modi insisted one on one meeting ? and he has managed to embarrass US with that ???

and last but not the least Modi insisted for foreign ministry clearance ???

This is called as 'Making' news ....

If US is desperate to break log jam with US so also is a case of Modi ...!
