US Senate okays Pak defence aid

Agencies

WASHINGTON: The US Senate has approved the country's defence budget with an amendment aimed at ensuring that military assistance for Pakistan is actually being used only to fight the Taliban and al Qaida.

The bipartisan amendment moved by Democrat Robert Menendez and Republican Bob Corker would mandate a certification by the secretaries of state and defence, before Pakistan is reimbursed with Coalition Support Funds, that the payment is both in the national security interests of the US, and will not affect the balance of power in the region.

"To this point, almost eight years and more than seven billion in American taxpayer dollars for Pakistan's military have not prevented the Taliban and al-Qaida from regrouping along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border," said Menendez.

"The fight against these extremists is crucial for our own security, which is why we have to certify that our support is in fact doing what we intend it to do and is not being used for other purposes.

"This is an issue of national security and of responsibility with taxpayer dollars, and it is important that passed the Senate."

"We appreciate the important role Pakistan has played in our fight to eliminate the terrorist safe havens within their borders, but we also owe it to our service members and the American taxpayer to ensure that the funds provided to Pakistan out of the Coalition Support Funds are in fact being directed toward those efforts and not misdirected," said Corker.

The Menendez-Corker amendment came amidst growing apprehension among lawmakers that the military aid given to Pakistan to fight against the Taliban and al-Qaida was being diverted for a build up against India instead of its intended purpose.

funny isnt it. the US owes us USD 1.3 bill for Coalition Support till April-09 and they are also putting conditions on that also!!!

Fine. But like all things demi-political its the devil in the real detail:

ON a silly concept if Pakistan goes thump the crud out of the militants in AJK because they are causing an internal problem, then is that in the interests of the US and does it disrupt the balance of power?

Seems that the interests of the US can fluctuate a tad here.

I do agree some form of control on this money needs to be applied.

Well, it's fine as long as we use this money for SWAT Missions only and for missions against B Mehsud....Oh the senator should look at India's Millitary and and Pakistan Millitary and see how far ahead Indians are and that even 5 billion millitary purchase won't effect balance of power..

Wow and we should be jumping with JOY:disagree:

Yeah, like spending approx US$ 80 Billion every year for 8 years has stabilized Afghanistan - but this kind of stuff sells in the US, really being a enemy to the US is dangerous, being it's friend is suicide.

It is well known fact that US enemosity is bad and friendship worst. I do not know why our leaders don't understand that.

We need to realize that solution to our problems does not lie in US grants or aid but in viable policies and political wisdom.

Because they dont want to understand afterall where do you think all this aid and grant end up with??

how much is the aid???? 1.5 Billion OR 4.5 Billion??

Can't PAK just refuse this aid? This aids are making them slaves and allowing the yankis to boss around on them. Pakistanis must be really angry on their leaders. Is there an agreement which allowed the yanks to force aid down PAK throat. I hope PAK gets
out of this mess and teaches US a lesson.
