(VOV) -On July 22, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a civilian nuclear cooperation deal with Vietnam, paving the way for Washington to expand relations with Hanoi.

The deal was signed by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in October 2013 on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Brunei. It was later approved by President Barack Obama in February 2014, and is currently awaiting final Senate approval.

In response to the aforementioned agreement, activists against nuclear weapon proliferation and some US lawmakers expressed concern that the pact does not ban Vietnam from enriching uranium or recycling plutonium- capacities that could be used to develop nuclear weapons.

To reassure naysayers, Vietnam signed a non-legally binding memorandum of understanding with the US, pointing out that Hanoi has no intention of seeking those capabilities.

The Vietnam-US civilian nuclear cooperation agreement also known as the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement 123, will allow American firms to penetrate Vietnam’s expanding market for nuclear power development.

According to the US Department of Commerce (DOC), the pact will help Vietnam open its doors for US companies to increase nuclear exports by US$10-20 billion, and generate more than 50,000 new jobs for American workers with high salaries.

The Vietnamese nuclear power market currently ranks second in East Asia second only to China, and is estimated to reach US$50 billion in revenue in the next two decades.

Nuclear energy is a plan that Vietnam is pursuing in order to deal with the current energy shortage and meet 10% of domestic electricity demand by 2030.

Russia and Japan have also reached nuclear cooperation agreements with Vietnam.

a good step forward to further normalization with America. next move will be the lift of weapons embargo. it is outdated and unfair.
the former US president Bill Clinton just visited Hanoi. I believe Clinton supports our stance.

our army needs means for self defence. China seeks ways to turn the region into battlefields.

One thing I'm worried about is Vietnam is proned to flooding, if we have nuclear powerplants I hope we don't have an incident like fukushima.

US forces JP to use its outdated nuke plant, thats why disaster happened. VN will use the best nuke tech for our plants, so the risk will reduce to minimum, bro :)

China needs to transfer our nuclear technology to Cambodia and Laos. Our ACP1000 nuclear reactor which is being exported should be exported to our friends and allies in Cambodia and Laos.

Yeah, it means that VN can make nuke bomb in emergency case :woot: :yahoo:

US will sanction China, and ur cheap economy will collapse

We can sell nuclear weapons to Iran, Brazil, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, to anyone we want. US is not the only country that can export nuclear technology including weaponization technology and expertise. Heck, we can even sell our missile technology to anyone we want.

Vietnam threatening to use nukes against China is even more laughable than North Korea threatening to use nukes against the US.

Use nukes against China and face hundreds of nukes in return and face extinction of the population.

No, China is weak nations, can not stand against US sanction. U forget that when US warn u to withdraw the oil rig in SCS(east sea), and u had to withdraw after the warning ??

China always piss on its pants when seeing US warning and sanction

most of 14 nuclear power plants will locate in central Vietnam. we will import the latest technologies from Russia, Japan, Korea and America and those plants will be protected against all possibilities.

Thailand will not sit tight if Cambodia has nuke tech. And Laos has to borrow VN money to by tech from China, uh yeah, so no.

Thailand will also get nuke tech. Laos can easily get money from China. We give billions of money to everyone. I think we need Cambodia and Laos fully armed nuclear weapons states helping China counter Vietnamese aggression.

US sanctions have never worked and has no impact on China. Sanctions will hurt the US far more as their companies earn $300 billion in sales in the Chinese market.

We will sell nuke tech to our friends and allies.

Don't forget that Iranian missile tech was transferred by us.

an interesting aspect is VN government has signed an agreement with the IAEA, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but not ratified the Additional Protocol. That is very important. That means the IAEA inspectors don´t have access to Vietnamese nuclear facilities.

In short, the IAEA does not have the right to carry out different types of on-site inspections in VN.

Nuclear Power in Vietnam

Talk is cheap, so when a weak and coward like u guys dare to sell some highly enriched uranium to Laos-Camb to counter nuke threat from VN ??

With this deal, its so clear that VN can make nuke bomb in emergency case (like drop some nuke on China lands) :pop:

Then Myanmar, Bangladesh, Indonesia? The list keeps going till China arms the whole world with nukes. Well done peaceful China.
