The Americans need Pakistani help. They are back to square one. They are offering the same candies as they did during Musharraf days when they initially entered Afghanistan. They want free and unhindered access to airspace and ground routes to make their Afghan adventure a face saving success. Obviously, without Pakistan this is impossible.

Yes, Pakistan should be asking for economic goodies, not weapons. Debt amnesty, free trade, step back in economic pressure (FATF and WB rekodiq case), and resumption of PIA direct flight (post pandemic).

In this domain we have excellent options from China and Russia. Joint ventures and off the shelf options.

What Pakistan needs from the US and its European allies is trade, trade and more trade. If Pakistan can increase trade concessions we will have punched above our weight.

Their delusions should concern us. Their adversary is our closest geopolitical partner. Telling them to bugger off is not productive. But we need to be clear on our end as to what our demands are if we're to have any meaningful relationship post-withdrawal.

Be realistic and forthcoming. Don't promise paradise. The Americans need to be under zero illusions. Remember that the Americans wanted to prop up India at our expense. We resisted and fought our way back to the table. These Americans weren't even ready to talk to us.

Let's try to make the most of it. In my opinion it should be about trade. Nothing more nothing less. In return we shouldn't give the Americans an arm and a leg. Give them the bare necessary. Airspace and ground access is fine as long as it doesn't undermine our own goals.

I recall reading somewhere that in the 1980's, Pakistani exporters paid more tariff taxes to USA then French exporters did, even though French economy was much much larger and more developed. USA still had a protectionist textile industry at the time.

Imagine if Zia and Benizir asked for tariff concessions and not aid money or F-16's. Main hinderance for Pakistan in the past has been a civil military elite that weren't focused on economic development. Thankfully, this has changed today.
