Bangladesh will be an important factor in Donald Trump's plans to combat militant group Islamic State, a senior US based researcher says.
“For the Trump administration, Bangladesh will be an important country,” Lisa Curtis, senior research fellow on South Asia, Asian Studies Center of the Heritage Foundation, told a seminar on Tuesday.
The seminar – ‘Politics, Security, and Extremism in Bangladesh and Policy Implications for the Trump Administration’ – was held at Washington’s Woodrow Wilson Centre.
According to CNN, conservative think tank Heritage Foundation is shaping up to be a major influence on Trump’s administration.
Curtis, in her speech, said political violence was hampering Bangladesh’s economic development, reports Bangla Tribune.
She expressed apprehension at the “increasing influence” of IS in Bangladesh and alleged that media freedom had declined in Bangladesh. Islamist radicals, she said, were taking advantage of the situation.
Dhaka has been denying strong presence of the Middle East-based militant group in the country.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also insists that the Bangladeshi media is enjoying “enough freedom” under her administration.
Her government has been lauded at home and abroad for cracking down on militants and extremists. Since the July 1 atrocity at the Holey Artisan bakery in Dhaka’s diplomatic quarter – the deadliest terror attack in the country’s history – the law enforcement agencies have killed dozens of suspected militants and arrested hundreds.
