Washington (AFP) - Efforts to improve ties with Cuba will not extend to handing control of Guantanamo Bay back to Havana, the White House said on Thursday.

"The president does believe that the prison at Guantanamo Bay should be closed down," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. "But the naval base is not something that we wish to be closed."

The base, on Cuba's southeastern tip, is currently the site of a large naval base as well as a deeply controversial prison used to detain terror suspects without trial.

Cuban President Raul Castro on Wednesday said handing back control of the 45 square mile (116 square kilometer) site was a precondition for normalizing ties with the United States.

Castro and Obama simultaneously announced on December 17 their intention to end a half-century of animosity and normalize ties that broke off in 1961.

The US took control of Guantanamo following a treaty in 1903.

Obama has repeatedly stated that holding prisoners at Guantanamo is a recruiting tool for terror groups, but has failed to close down the facility.

Cuba will be ours in this lifetime. Even the Castros know it.

US failed invasion in the past, Cuba become a communist ever since.
Buddy, in 1962 the US physically blockaded Cuba and the Soviets backed down. Today, an invasion of Cuba could be done by Miami-Dade County Sheriff Dept., not the US military.

Already dude, blocked the Soviet whatnot, Cuba after US invasion become a communist rule by Fidel Castro and his brother ever since. US sanction Russia for annexed Crimea, hypocrisies for US not return Guantanamo back to Cuba. What might is right, US won't ever remain the sole superpower in this world, shit will comeback to the US many fold.

True that, no power can stop/deter the U.S from doing so. Only the U.S.S.R came close to projecting power close to U.S shores and even threatened the U.S mainland itself. Today no country even comes close/have a say in what the U.S does/wants to do.
However I don't think the U.S will invade China anytime soon. No real gain in doing so tbh.

It will go back to Cuba, it is an inevitability.

It will go back to Cuba once Cuba become an American directorate again, which is, almost never gonna happen.

The lease for Cuba predate Vienna Convention and Article 4 of Vienna Convention of 1969 forbid said convention to apply for a retrospect,, so there are no legal ground for Cuba to recover Gitmo. And the lease does not states the term of the lease, it just mentions that it was a condition for US withdrawing troop from Cuba after its independence, so basically unless US relinquish the Base, Cuba is not getting it back.

And Also unlike the lease of HK and Macau to UK and Portugal. US does not depend on Cuba to survive, trade relation is minimal but UK and Portugal have a great trade relation with China, hence unless US really want Cuban Cigar and sugarcane, Cuban could have demand anything for all they care but US have no obligation to meet them. Cuba need US more than US need Cuba

And that's the base reality

Hi,

It is just a matter of time that Cuba will become a U S protectorate---neither does U S need to do anything drastic nor does it need to create any scenarios. With trade---prosperity will come---Castro brother will be history in a few years---progress will not be stopped---all the barriers will be dropped.

Once the change starts---it will be like a lightening bolt---.

I beg to disagree here. If that did not happen in Panama, how is this going to happen in Cuba?

No--they don't want to colonize---it is just a matter of time and geographical location that things will change once the opening has been made.

U S Cubans may hate commie cuba----but as things start to change---there will be opportunities to make a lots of money for those established and waiting.

It would be just like india----when expats went back to india 10--15 years ago----they made fortunes---india was pening up to the U S and thoe who were ready----made bank.

You are new on the board---so welcome.

Here is the official unofficial reality...

- Puerto Rico: US 51st state.
- Canada: US 52nd state.
- Mexico: US 53rd state.
- Cuba: Soon to be US 54th state.
- Venezuela: Candidate US 55th state.

We do not need to have those stars on the US flag. Every leader in those countries know how they stand in relation to US.

For those who laughs at Venezuela being a US interest...

The Oil Drum | Tech Talk - Venezuela, heavy crudes, API gravity and refinery gains
...heavy Venezuelan crude that, until now, has largely been sent to specialized refineries in the United States that are designed to handle it.
The story in the oil industry goes this way...And it is hilarious...

Before he died, Hugo Chavez wanted to poke US in the eyes and offered China a deal the Chinese government could not refuse: Venezuela will sell Orinoco crude, considers among the worse quality in the industry, to China at a discount, Venezuela will also subsidize Chinese fuel transport from/to China.

China's response: Deal.

Except China did not tell Venezuela what China will do with Venezuela's crappy oil. Chinese oilmen took Chavez's fuel subsidy money, loaded up their tankers, then ran up north and sold to US refiners. There are other refiners in the world that can handle Orinoco crude, few as they are, but why should China spend more of that free money to run to them when US refiners are only a couple days away, and the run will be made in calm sea and nice weather at that ? Regardless of whether the Chinese sold the crappy Orinoco crude to US refiners or paid to have it processed, the Chinese made out and there was/is nothing Venezuela can do about it.

US shale oil is considered 'light sweet crude' and will always be in high demand over 'heavy and sour' Orinoco crude. Eventually, China will abandon Venezuela and that mean Venezuela may be the first petro state to be without a customer. It is not as if the warning horn about US shale oil influence have not been tooted. That horn was as loud and annoying as a cheap car alarm at 3AM. We will buy the inferior Orinoco crude but it will be at our pleasure and price. If not fold into the US sphere of control like Cuba, Venezuela will submit to US influence anyway. Either that, or suffers a national catastrophe -- bankruptcy.
