US refuse to hand back Guantanamo to Cuba!

.
This just legitimizes Russian takeover of Crimea.

not really. we gained control over Guantanamo because of a treaty/lease. Did Russia gain control of the Crimea the same way???

I know they was paying Ukraine to use Crimea.

You got the treaty by force, atleast the Russian have a historical claim along with presence of Russian people in the area.

treaty is a treaty is a treaty :D
if the claim is true which I agree, but then that means a lot of countries have the right to take back land by force??

I wouldn't care if Ukraine/Russia made a deal/treaty/agreement for Crimea.

Guantamo bay is 45 Square miles compared to the Crimea which is 10,425 Square miles. the U.S would have to take over the Eastern third of Cuba to make it a fair comparison :D

@C130 a terrible treaty is a recipe for conflict.
You would not care for anything except American interest, which is fine by me. Just don't think you can claim moral highground by mere existence of treaty.

Remember the treaty of Versailles

The takeover of Crimea is about the port of Sevastopol, same as Guantanamo bay, strategic locations.

Do you even know the history of Cuba and what that treaty is about?? It's nothing like Russian Lease Sevastopol and then annex the whole Crimea....

The US Marine is the one that kick the Spanish Force out so Cuba can gain their independence, back in 1901, the US forces declare war on Spain and start the Spanish-American war and the US Marine expel the Spanish Garrison on Cuba, the US could have annexed Cuba back in 1901, but instead they signed a treaty saying the US is leaving Cuba for its people with the sole exchange of Gitmo to American. That Treaty was signed in 1903.

Just because Cuban leadership changes hand that does not mean the treaty is not effective. Treaty of Versailles does not affect Cuban-American situation as the American did not colonize Cuba, in fact they did the opposite....

The American could have colonize Cuba, but they didn't, instead, they left Cuba for Cuban, with a sole condition of renting the base as long as Americans needs it.

terrible treaty??
Any treaty which is considered as completely unjust is a terrible one. Treaty of Versailles is an example.
@jhungary
Treaties can become ineffective if one of the sides refused to honor it.
Very magnanimous of the US to not colonize Cuba.

Hi,

It is just a matter of time that Cuba will become a U S protectorate---neither does U S need to do anything drastic nor does it need to create any scenarios. With trade---prosperity will come---Castro brother will be history in a few years---progress will not be stopped---all the barriers will be dropped.

Once the change starts---it will be like a lightening bolt---.

why would the American want that?

We already have Puerto Rico, and given Cuba protectorate status would mean you allow the Cuban to walk around and live around the US for free, I mean, I had enough for one little Cuba in Miami, I don't want to see a little Cuba in every states.

Any treaty which is considered as completely unjust is a terrible one. Treaty of Versailles is an example.

You are right, Treaty may become ineffective if one party does not honour it, so let the Cuban come try to take Gitmo from US Navy........

And the treaty on 1901 also said, if Cuban refuse the least, US would, in their capacity send troop to occupy Cuba again. Well, nobody stopping Cuban and Castro (both) to kick the US Navy out of Gitmo, the only words is "Come and get it"

.
Protectorate is just as in a term---just being under the influence of the U S----which ultimately it will be---. Why did it surprise you.

Protectorate is not just a term, that have association to goes with being a protector and a protectorate.........

Puerto Rico is a Protectorate of the US, people born in Puerto Rico have to be considered "American " or "American Subject" to enjoy protection from the US, otherwise it is against international law to "protect" a citizens if not of your own.

That's why a British cannot be protected by China or a Chinese cannot be protected by America....

Then giving them Protectorate status would literally made all Cuban American, and by law, we would have to give them free travel to the United States and treats them the same as any other American.

Well, I don't know about you, but I don't want that to happen
