KARACHI: The US anti-terrorism program’s head handed over most modern bomb disposal and safety and post-blast investigation equipment, worth US$ 50, 000 to the Sindh police on behalf of US government, SAMAA reports Thursday.

Bryce Miles, senior representative of US Consulate in Karachi and Robert A Clark, Resident Program Manager, Anti-Terrorism Assistance, US Embassy, Islamabad, called on Inspector General of Police, Sindh Fayyaz Ahmed Laghari at central police office here today.

The equipment consisted of 60 items including hand-carry metal detector, mine detector and protective bomb suits. The provision of these equipments is part of ongoing course on post-blast investigation for Sindh police.

While talking with media, IG Sindh said that five policemen were killed in last three days but police cannot be weakened in such a way.

He thanked the US representative saying the equipment would help in reducing the terror activities. SAMAA

EOD training coupled with PBI and this equipment will further strengthen the SSU in Karachi. Could not have come at a better time, however, i think that Min. Interior should release additional funds for provincial LEOs to fund their own equipment purchases instead of waiting from hand outs from the ATAP or ICITAP.

There are Bomb suits in service with Peshawar BDS and Isl BDS. There are also robots that can be used for bomb disposal. Pictures of them being tested at at a PA Signals mess in Pindi are also on the net. (not sure if the robot is by PA or civil services)

I am admire from your good knowledge...the training for the above stuff was held in Jordan ( KASTEC) and ATAP trained 24 law enforcement personals from four province of Pakistan...these stuff if you have knowledge already been with the concerned dept. with the bunch of quantity but lake of management we lose the Inspector Hukam Khan from KPK. The point that Min of Interior raise or release funds the question is who will trained?? I personally knows one of Sindh police trained BDS person is performing the duty "" DANDA DUTY"" on one individual training cost comes approx. 40000 USD for seven weeks

My friend this is the problem when you dont have good leadership who understand the importance of training and its utilisation. For example when ATAP frist trained ATS in Islamabad Police, many EOD techs were re assigned to ITP, and ATS jawans trained in Crisis Response Team (SWAT) were assigned as gunmen to politicians.

It took a lot of time, but with the great leadership of several police officials in Islamabad such as SSP Taimuri, IG kalim Immam, Director BDS T.Zaheer and N K Durrani, islamabad ATS has a dedicated range, training suite and multi story shoot house. Also under the leadership of Kalim Imman and Director BDS, Islamabad BDS now has dedicated EOD techs trained by ATAP in EIC, PBI and CSM.

It is a very capable unit with a very experienced and technically astute commanding officer. The same needs to be replicated throughout the other provinces, especially KPK... But it is easier said than done.

Also i would recommend you pay a visit to Intersafe - The International Security, Anti-terrorism and Fire Exhibition in Lahore, my former ustad and Pakistan's leading expert on EOD will be attending as a guest speaker, hope to see you there :)
