US-Pak negotiations on nuclear cooperation?

US should take note of Pak track record: India: Rediff.com India News
With the United States indicating its readiness to discuss civil nuclear deal with Pakistan, India [ Images ] on Monday hoped it would keep in mind Pakistan's track record on proliferation before deciding on the issue.

As it keeps a close watch on the developments, India says the 'right balance' has to be struck between meeting Pakistan's energy needs and its history of proliferation.

"We hope international community would strike the right balance between meeting energy needs of any country while taking on board its track record with regard to proliferation of nuclear technology and weapons of mass destruction," official sources said.

The comment came in the wake of US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson reportedly saying the US was 'beginning to have a discussion with the Pakistan government' on the country's desire to tap nuclear energy.

She noted that earlier America's 'non-proliferation concerns were quite severe' but 'I think we are beginning to pass those and this is a scenario that we are going to explore.'

Patterson said 'working level talks' on the issue would be held in Washington this month. The statement marks a significant shift in the US position as it had earlier repeatedly turned down Pakistan's pleas for India-type civil nuclear deal.

The US had been arguing that Pakistan's track record was not as good as that of India, which had a strong history of non-proliferation.

It is loud thinking, will not materialize.

The cost is a issue but not effct much as they want uranium, scrapping of sanctions and technologies not nuke plants.

The majority of business will goes to china and may be some little to France.

Also, to get it pak must have understanding with India.

If India, Russia oppose it, it will never get implemented.

Russia will oppose as it will not get its pie and because of its friend India.

There is Iran and Israel angle also.

So are you saying India will openly object it? well my opinion is also the same, never really expected anything positive out of India in the 1st place but its too soon to comment as the idea of a possible deal is pretty farfetched in it self.

India don't wanna give more nuke that can be fall into wrong hands or danger to world peace.

This is the usual:disagree:. No need to comment.

Just when i thought it was too early to comment, this happens, but i stand correct in my assertion dont expect anything positive out of India.

this was expected thought not so soon

Pakistan cant be the only one going peace peace and letting India use our railways when they wont even want Pakistan to have the same energy deal that they wanted for their people. How horrible is that?

US rejects report of Pak N-deal

Islamabad: US diplomats based in Pakistan on Monday played down reports of a possible civilian nuclear deal with the country after India urged their government to consider the proliferation track record of Pakistan before deciding on the matter.

The US embassy in Pakistan told a TV channel it would act in accordance with their country’s policy on Pakistan and nuclear proliferation and denied there were any steps to bring Pakistan in the civil nuclear energy ambit, a la India.

The US envoy to India Timothy J. Roemer, however, declined to comment on media reports suggesting that the US was thinking of offering a similar deal to Pakistan.

No N-deal with Pakistan yet: America

NDTV Correspondent, Monday March 22, 2010, New Delhi

Amid reports of a possible civil nuclear deal between US and Pakistan, the American embassy in Pakistan has told NDTV that there are no negotiations on for such an agreement. Yet.

A spokesman of the US embassy in Pakistan said: "The US has not entered negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan. The United States is committed to helping Pakistan address its real and growing energy needs, and we look forward to cooperating with Pakistan in ways that are compatible with Pakistan's economic, environmental and security needs and with US international commitments and policies."

Earlier, the words of Anne W. Patterson, US Ambassador to Pakistan, suggested a change of heart on the part of Washington, which has so far kept rebuffing Pakistan's request for a nuclear deal. Patterson said in an interview to a US-based Pakistani newspaper: "We are beginning to have a discussion with the Pakistan Government" on the country's desire to tap nuclear energy.

She said these would be "working level talks" on the issue in Washington this month. "Earlier on, non-proliferation concerns were quite severe. I think we are beginning to pass those and this is a scenario that we are going to explore...," Patterson said.

Reacting cautiously to the possibility of a deal between the US and Pakistan, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said: "America needs to take a holistic view on the US-Pak nuclear deal...The US should consider Pakistan's track record before any deal."

Government sources said India hoped the international community would strike the right balance between meeting energy needs of any country while taking on board its track record on proliferation of nuclear technology and weapons of mass destruction.

The BJP was quick to criticise reports of a possible US-Pakistan deal, and also accused America of overlooking Pakistan's role in Kashmir. Spokesman Tarun Vijay also said the "N-liability bill is shameful, appeasing the US. It's not acceptable to us." He said the "Prime Minister owes it to the nation that before going to Washington he must clarify the stand and should not do anything against the known position of the Indian state."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit the US next month. Sources have said another stage of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal is through and the public announcement is expected when the PM visits Washington.

India and US have agreed on reprocessing fuel. India can process spent nuclear fuel for reuse in civil nuclear reactors. Reprocessing will be done under international safeguards at a national facility.

Aray bhai, as pointed out before, there will be talks about talks. Patterson and others only said that the US would be willing to talk about the issue now in the Strategic Dialog.

It is the media that jumped from there to a nuclear deal, not the GoP.

i can't remember even one project of USA in our energy sector

USA talks too much :blah: :blah:

No surprise here either, the idea in itself was pretty farfetched to say the least.
By the way it pretty much sums up the so called strategic dialogue between the US and Pakistan, our leaders were harping over so much. What else remains on the agenda?:disagree:
