US Navy issues contract for second Constellation class frigate

It seems to be comparable to Type 054A frigate, with the latest ships having improved radars. @dbc @F-22Raptor

constellation class has an electronics suite most destroyers would envy.
Range? Equal to 054A indicating that the extra tonnage was not used for fuel.

Radar? Both AESA.

Speed? Both equal.
the connies have a far more advanced electronics and weapons suite. The HQ-16A is a really poor missile.

HQ-16A is the same as Type 03 Chu from Japan and HQ-16B is about the same as Barak from India.

I have no idea where you came up with the electronics portion which nobody really knows about for sure and is at odds with observation of the two country's publicly known electronics sectors.

Type-54A should be compared with upgraded OHPs (G-class) and Admiral Grigorovich.

Constellation class is in same league as Type-52DL Destroyers.

Still, even if fire power alone is considered, Constellation class is far ahead of Type 54A.

You should make sourced statements or at least explain yourself as a think tank analyst. Simply asserting something doesn't make it true.

HQ-16A is a 600kg missile that has the same range as CAMM-ER (160kg) and ESSM (280kg)- a missile that is also 2 meters shorter. ESSM and CAMM-ER will also serve better when it comes to SHORAD due to them being developed from the offset for PD.

No, we know for a fact that the SPY-6 is THE MOST ADVANCED radar system on a frigate out there. In fact, lets say for a second that SPY-6 and SR2410C were on par capabilities wise, the SPY-6 has the advantage of being a fixed face array providing constant coverage in azimuth, as opposed to the SR2410C which can only scan in a 120 degree azimuth at best per sweep, that in itself is an inherent advantage of the flat faced array, completely ignoring the fact that US radar tech is far more mature, alongside the other advantages of SPY-6.

I see, thank you. It seems that Constellation has a destroyer sensor suite, just on a smaller platform.

It'll take decades to build 20 such ships considering these are built in Italy which is very slow at building ships.

Italy? What? No!

Constellation could be America's answer to China's Type 052D heavy frigate which has quite capable AESA panels and 130 mm gun. @Akh1112

In general, future US navy primarily Constellation and Arleigh Burke Flight III, with Constellation being the counterpart of Type 052D and Arleigh Burke Flight III being the counterpart of Type 055.

You can think of Constellation as a Type 052D lite and Arleigh Burke Flight III as a Type 055 lite. Early Arleigh Burke Flights I, II, IIA will be replaced by Arleigh Burke Flight III. US navy does not use light frigates and diesel powered subs Chinese navy uses.

“Constellation” almost sounds like a class of ships in Starfleet

Thank goodness, finally a decent frigate.

Those LCS ships were an embarrassment to the Navy. When I brought up how lightly armed the LCS were to the ship’s crew at a fleet week a few years ago, they just said something to the effect of maybe it was part of a new strategy.

There is a Captain James Kirk in the US navy commanding one of the Zumwalts. When the new Enterprise is build he may get to command that. :)

The LCS ships were just corvettes, but IMO still lightly armed compared to other corvettes we see in other navies. They were never meant to be frigates.

What ever they were, the were indeed too lightly armed to serve the navy any real good. They would have been better utilized if they had been given to the Coast Guard for the Southern command Counter narcotics role.

The LCS did have a “moon bay” (if I remember correctly from the public tour) to launch unmanned submersibles; so basically they were over glorified boats for NOAA and should have been home ported at Woodshull Massachusetts.

LCS is US counterpart of Type 056. Constellation is US counterpart of Type 052D.

Wasn't the Zumwalt suppose to replace Ticonderoga or Arleigh Burk? They just built 3 and were done.

I think what China is building, is sensible. The Type-054s ought to be incrementally upgraded as time goes on. But what China needs is Type-055s and Type-052Ds in greater numbers.

As for the american Constellation Class, well it's "Johnny came late to the party" for this one. America has squandered billions of dollars on their LCS nonsense. So the Constellation Class is more of a "knee jerk reaction" by america than anything else.
