A senior counter-terrorism official told lawmakers on Wednesday that U.S. intelligence agencies have set up a nonstop threat assessment center to analyze and collect information on potential plots to attack the upcoming Olympic games in London.

“The Olympics present a potential target for terrorists and other disruptive groups,” said Matthew Olsen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC).

“We are working closely with our British counterparts to ensure that we are collecting, analyzing and sharing all potential threat information relating to the Olympics and that we are in a position to respond quickly to prevent any possible plotting tied to the games.”

Olsen, testifying before the House Homeland Security Committee, said the NCTC and other U.S. intelligence agencies have launched a 24/7 “Threat Integration Center,” which is “designed to operate around the clock providing real-time situational awareness and threat analysis.”

The Summer Olympic games are slated to hold opening ceremonies Friday, with games lasting through Aug. 12. First lady Michelle Obama is leading the official U.S. delegation to the games. Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney also will attend the opening ceremony.
