US greatly values Pakistan’s insight on Afghanistan: Pentagon

* American official says Washington and Islamabad have a common enemy and goal

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has described Pakistan as a “really important” country for the US, saying Washington very much values the key South Asian partner’s insight on Afghanistan and the region.

“I think Pakistan is a really important country for the US. We are trying very hard to build a strategic partnership with Pakistan,” Michele Flournoy, undersecretary of Defence for Policy, said in an interview. She underscored Pakistan’s vital significance both in terms of immediate goals in the Afghan border region and long-term South Asian security perspective.

“In the immediate term, because they are a critical partner in the war against al Qaeda and its allies but also because South Asia is such a critical region. It’s very important to build up the conditions for stability in that region and for great reduction of tensions in the region. Pakistan has got to be a critical partner in that equation,” she said on the PBS channel.

Separately, a senior American military official said the US is trying to do everything it can to assist Pakistanis in their battle against terrorism. “We also value Pakistan’s strategic insight when it comes to Afghanistan and the region and continue to consult their leaders closely, as exemplified by numerous visits by senior US officials to Pakistan. Islamabad, as you know, is a key ally and we face a common enemy and a common goal: a stable and secure Pakistan and the region,” the military official told reporters at a Pentagon briefing.

Answering questions about Pakistan’s stepped up campaigns against terrorists, particularly the arrest of Afghan Taliban leaders, the military official disagreed with suggestions that through these actions Islamabad was perhaps seeking an influence on the future course of Afghanistan.

“I really do believe it was a sense they realised that they had this insurgency problem inside their country and they had to do something about it because it was coming after their government and their way of life to unseat what they did. And I think it spurred them on to taking action.”

The official praised Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism, particularly in the context of recent operations in South Waziristan. “As you know, the accomplishments of the Pakistan security forces have been quite impressive. To see the gains that they have made in this short time is a real testament to the resolve, the fighting spirit and the leadership of Pakistan’s armed forces.” The official also paid tribute to the sacrifices the Pakistani nation is offering in the ongoing struggle.

“Many people don’t realize the sacrifices the Pakistan people, the government, military and security forces have made in this war. An estimated 5,000 security force members, innocent civilians have been killed since 2001”. app

About damn time, we were there against the soviets and we are here against the terrorists and both time we suffered more than anyone except Afghanistan. Now hush up and send some of the US companies for better cooperation and increase economic cooperation, not worthless aid packages.

The key is in getting FTA, which we do not have, partnership in many sectors and cultural exchanges. Once that is sone and we go back on track to economic surge with Afghanistan. This extremist problem will go away, it's about recovery not victory.

Don't you think it is pretty lame to give ideas to the U.S.?
Don't you think they already know what we always talk about?
If they know our problems than why are not they helping us in a way we want?
We helped them in a way they wanted..didn't we?
Now after 10 years of fighting we have concluded that the U.S. needs us because of our location and "maybe" a brokerage between the U.S. and certain militant groups. So we were only being "used" by foreign powers.

This is just a brief example of American's or Europeans should I say killing natives
"After the Civil War, Manifest Destiny expansion began in earnest. The Transcontinental Railroad and other trade routes linking California with the eastern states disrupted traditional Native America interactions. Many Native American tribes of the Great Plains and Southwest resisted this encroachment. Generals from the Civil War such as William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip Sheridan were assigned to conquer any Indians who offered military resistance to the expansion of the United States."

All the things they say about Pakistan i.e. a long term partner cannot be trusted at all.

They betrayed us many times and we should be ready for another shock.

We got F16s :) with sanctions :frown: but on other hand thousands of our soldiers died.

I am not justifying that Al Qaeda or TTP is doing the right thing but it is a "fact" that our downfall started when the U.S. came to Afghanistan. Why did this happen "after" the U.S. came?

We need to look for other 5th generation aircraft as well to diversify the technologies and reduce dependence on one source.

Time for Pakistan Army to reintegrate Afghanistan into Pakistan :pakistan:

its this kind of thinking that has made enemies out of Afghans, you keep thinking of them as tools as if its not a nation that deserves its own place in this world. Whatever's happening in Pakistan today is because of these stupid policies and this "gangster" thinking that was ushered in when Talibs took control in Afghanistan, now i see the euphoria returning back. There needs to be a serious policy change with respect to how we deal with Afghanistan, it was due to our effed up policies that the Afghans allowed RAW to take root in their country it was their form of payback and as long as this continues we'll never be able to get rid of our demons. Stop thinking like we own Afghanistan, they are not proxies they are a sovereign nation its about frikin time you realised that

Isn't it more like various tribes that fight between each other, and the occasional foreign invader? From what I understand, they has only been a city-state of Kabul.

However, King Amanullah Khan did unite Afghanistan. If only someone like him were to lead the Afghan people again.
