I don't think we can make any metal artificially...so gold isn't special in that sense.
Platinum and palladium are much rarer than gold.

That "precious metal" term is only because of the whim of man

the platinium and pallidium are too rare to be used as currency.gold can be used as currency because it has less usage in technological or production of other items as compared to other rare metals like pllatinium which have more use in technology and are not much available to be used as currency.
