US forces make inroads into Haqqani heartland, kill 115

WASHINGTON: US forces, in a big push into areas close to Pakistan's lawless North Waziristan, have killed 115 insurgents in four days of intense fighting against Haqqani militants to gain control of a critical corridor and resupply route to key bases in northeastern Afghanistan.

US and Nato forces are using long-range rockets fired from more than 120kms away to break-up large groups of Haqqani network, al-Qaida and Taliban militants, who, according to intelligence reports , are concentrated in Kunar province.

The US commanders have described the ongoing operation codenamed 'Knife Edge' as a "high-intensity , sensitive" mission to hit the Haqqani network, the New York Times reported in firsthand account from Kunar's provincial capital Asadabad.

US military officials said the fighting in Kunar province has been going on since October 15. "Our greatest concentration has been on Ghaziabad district, where we believe the Taliban have built their bases and strongholds," said Col Mohammed Numan Atifi, a spokesman for the Afghan National Army's 201st Corps.

US puts Pak on notice over terror

KABUL: United States secretary of state Hillary Clinton delivered a tough warning to Pakistan hours before arriving in the country on Thursday, saying it was time for Islamabad to decide whether it would help or hinder the USled war on militants.

Clinton, in Kabul for meetings with Afghan president Hamid Karzai, said: "We must send a clear, unequivocal message to the government and people of Pakistan that they must be part of the solution and that means ridding their own country of terrorists who kill their own people and cross the border to kill in Afghanistan," she said. "We're going to be fighting, we're going to be talking and we're going to be building. And they can either be helping or hindering, but we are not going to stop our efforts."

She warned militants that "we are going to seek you in your safe havens" on both sides of the Afghan-Pakistani border and confirmed a US operation against the hardline Haqqani network it blames for some of the worst war attacks.

She arrived in Islamabad later on Thursday with an unusually large delegation. The two-day visit is Clinton's second trip to Islamabad since Osama bin Laden was killed in a US raid in Abbottabad in May.

This is very misleading statement.

There are some provinces in Afghanistan where Taliban have registered minimum presence or no presence at all. However, there are some provinces where Taliban have registered strong presence. All of this depends upon facilitation from the locals. Some support Taliban and some don't.

One should also mentioned that all the US attacks against the Haqqanis (that killed 115 Haqqani operatives) were in Paktia, Logar, Paktika, Wardak etc. Not in Pakistan.
