A video has been posted online of the training air battles by U.S. pilots. The U.S. Air Force F-18D Hornet encountered Malaysian Air Force’s Su-30MKM during a training dogfight.

The video was posted on The Ready Room YouTube channel.

The video shows three air battles that took place on the same day. This time, luck was on the side of the F-18, but the video publisher indicates that this video should not mislead anyone, because in fact, during other exercises, the Su-30 “downed” the F-18.
The American pilot also confirms that the confrontation with the Su-30MKM was the most violent. It can only be compared to a training air combat against the F-22. So, for example, the Su-30 stunted maneuvering (spinning at an angle of 90 degrees) using the thrust conveyor for its engines. According to the author of the video, this maneuver was favorable.

The video publisher described both planes and their characteristics. The American pilot also spoke of the maneuvers and tactics that could not be captured with a fixed video camera.

The Su-30 will have a better chance against F-18. Naval aviation is considered inferior against air force air superiority fighter planes.

A better yardstick will be Su-30 vs F15E.

No.

Not even close.

In anycase, this F-18 wins all 3 engagements.

But watch the whole thing and listen to Gonky's comments.

I wonder whose F/A-18 the US pilot is flying? Since their stock of F/A-18 air frames lives have been exhausted years ago. They are suppose to be flying only the larger Super Hornets.

Definately if a Russian pilot was in the cockpit of that Su-30 the outcome could have been very different. He would push the Flanker right to the edge of its capabilities. Given that US naval aviators are among the very best fighter pilots in the world, this fight could come down to a slight error brought on by exhaustion as most dogfights will last less than 60 seconds. If you go above that, G-forces start to impair your concentration/alertness and errors kick in.

He is flying an RMAF F/A-18D.

Interesting, because the Royal Malaysian AF F/A-18D is primed for maritime strike rather than air superiority. But then in a WVR engagement, pilot skill and experience is a very important deciding factor.
