Shia's and Sunni's cant do anything about Kurd Area, but you are right Kurdistan wouldnt be allowed to become, WHY? cuz Turkey wont let it. You should know more about the region. Kurds love the americans.
Iraq will be divided for sure, if not by America then by Iraqi's themselves it is envitable
Dear Adux,
You are very right when you say Kurds in todays Iraq demanding independence in the western sense needs Turkish official consent. The ground position after the Kuwait war is as follows.
1. Iraq was devided after the Kuwait war into two parts. Iraq controlled by Saddam and the Kurd areas in the North which hold the major oil reserves. For this in 1996 a no fly zone was established under ONW (Operation North Watch) which was the longest active combat operation in US European Command history. Provide Comfort originally set up the northern no-fly zone, which banned Iraqi flights north of the 36th parallel, to ensure that Saddams aircraft did not harass Kurds and other minorities in the north near the Turkish border after the Gulf War. It is based out of Incirlik Air Base in south-central Turkey and has 45 or so planes assigned to the mission. Operation Northern Watch began January 1, 1997.
2. The Kurds than set up an autonomous region with their own capital. A deal was signed between the Iraqi Kurds, USA and Turkey in which the Iraqi Kurds would not allow the PKK (Kurd Movement on the Turkish side) from launching attacks on Turkey from the Iraqi Kurd side. The Iraqi Kurds love America.
3. Now in Iraq there seems to be a Shia Sunni fight and no solution in sight. The new Iraqi Govt had warned the Iraqi Kurds not to sign independant oil deals with foreign companies. The Iraqi Kurds ignored it and the first new major oild field was recently given to a Norwegian company.
So in reality Iraq was already devided into two parts with the Oil area with US loving Kurds. My point if Saddam could not do anything against this arrangement I doubt the present regime can do anything by force.
