'US-Bangla military diplomacy up'

I have been hearing about the Uranium stuff for a while. Can you tell me how much uranium deposit does Bangladesh have if it really has a reserve.

I have seen a EU report that shows significant deposits in Sylhet and other northern districts.

Russia and Bangladesh sign agreement on exploration and development of uranium deposits, among others
Russia and Bangladesh have signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Among others, the agreement covers cooperation in the exploration and development of uranium and thorium deposits, and the supply of nuclear fuel for power and research reactors. (World Nuclear News May 21, 2010)

Bangladesh and Russia Thursday (Feb. 24) reached an agreement that is expected to lead to the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant, a two-unit facility at Rooppur, 200 km (124 miles) from the capital of Dhaka, a top government official said. [Rosatom head] Kiriyenko said the agreement also provides for cooperation in the areas of prospecting and developing uranium and thorium deposits, nuclear fuel cycle services, including supplies of nuclear fuel to power and research reactors. A layman like me will also understand why US is coming close to BD- to keep China out..
Infact India will be happy with that. And some "think tank" here are bring India on everything related to BD.

Indian super power claims should be dropped based on this post. No super power or a country with such ambitions will let a neighboring poor country host another super power. This or the colonial mentality has still not left India, they always want to serve their white masters.

US is india's friend now and why will BD-US friendship will have India's problem. By your logic there will be no defense cooperations. Have China has any problem with Russia Coming closure to India ??

Meghalaya in India and adjacent to Sylhet has a large deposit of uranium. But, it is not that USA has any shortage of uranium. It has many sources and BD deposits have not yet been checked out. I believe, USA has two goals. One is to keep both China and India at bay from trying to dominate the region from BD to its east.

This region consists of many small countries. China will trouble them unless they are under US protection. China is good with BD and Pakistan, but not in good terms with any of the ASEAN countries that borders China. India is a poor country but is trying to behave like an artificial superpower with its smaller neighbours. So, USA feels it can fill in the blank created by the ambitions of these super big countries with big population and the uneasiness of the small countries.

Another point is BD may have a good quantity of oil deposit in the BoB. Read the link below to know that the USA has a satellite technology that uses the gravitational attractions of different substances at the subsoil level by which it can approximately find out oil deposits. It may not be the exact technology, but the satellite images give quite a hint about the oil deposites. Now, it is possible that in order to get hold of oil it wants to engage us militarily, economically and diplomatically.

USA certainly does not cherish the prospect of Chinese oil or sea port involvement in the Bay although the GoB is considering to offer a few blocks to China in the western Bay along the Indian claims. Now, click the link below to know how satellite readings are converted to get information about oil deposits:

Epic post. BD people are jumping in joy that US has engaged BD and it is India which has slave Mentality because it is not opposing a Military base in BD

RIP to Logic.

Understand the reality mates. Colonial rules are over. Engage the countries based on mutual interests and stop whining about India.

Americans hve finally found out how tasty hilsha fish is, they are simply plannijg to take our fishes.

Nooo..ooooo..ooo..ooo... anything but Hilsha!! Take all the oil you want and get the hell out of here! :frown:

Jumping with joy? We're discussing how to be more cautious in our approach, and how to maintain relation with one of our largest export market without distancing the dragon.

IQ. :)

US aided India in bringing BAL to power via a rigged election. India wanted US to look at BD through the delhi prism but US being the lone superpower won't give into Indian delusions naturally. SO Indians are now finding a middle ground by bringing the bully US to do the work for them. US influence in BD's affairs will perfectly complement Indian interest considering the fact that BD is not something that bharat can have permanent grip on. SO if BD is taken out of chinese sphere of influence, it will serve Indian interest to some degree. BD should maintain a balance relation between US and china. We can not afford to lose a reliable and trusted partner like china for the yankis. The chinese won't stay quiet if BD mingles with US too much. They have plenty of allies in the region which is growing in number.

Whatever you said is correct and the best approach which is to be adopted. Every country must try to have good relations with all countries.....however your countrymen are accusing India for not opposing a US base in BD......and you interpreted in a different way.....IQ indeed :)

While you focused on domestic politics and developments let me expand on regional and extra regional developments that is also influencing US overreach.

Aside from indian double crossing and China factor, US is also looking into post 2014 scenario in Central Asia and middle east. Given US position is greatly undermined in middle east and position in Central Asia is shaky at best, US is looking for new anchors for these regions. Indian ocean was important but it became more important given diminishing influence US and also for Asia Pacific pivot. We also have to factor in China already has base making and monitoring capability in Myanmar, SriLanka and at mouth of Persian Gulf through Gwadar. India already been double crossing and cannot be trusted with its intension.
In these backdrops, US is moving its sphere of power projection centers further south but not far from middle east or from busy shipping corridor of Malacca strait. Myanmar is already been probed by US and some inroad has been made, Bangladesh is pursued persistently and latest is US is on its way to secure a Maldives island to use as a base/air base. Now if you connects these dots in Diego Garcia, Maldives, Bangladesh, Myanmar an US string of pearl emerges. That gives a glimpse of from where US will pursue military backed diplomacy for south Asia and Middle East region in coming years. Not to mention all these places US looking to insert itself China is main or major contender. At policy making level in US there has been growing thrust (not just election rhetoric) to isolate China while they can.

All these vectors driving US push southward and Bangladesh happens to be in the strategic path of big power contention.

Now what can country like Bangladesh do in such situation? Neither traditional political leadership nor military can be counted to uphold people interest. Perhaps, Central Asian states can provide some examples how they are living between contention of big powers.

Very interesting analysis. Indeed, the American 'String of Pearls' appears very real.

Interestingly, much of the Central Asian states are members of the SCO.

Any sources for these 'facts'?

The US does not see Bangladesh through the Indian lens. Ambassador Mozena has been very clear about this. History also suggests that as well.

Only US smelling BoB oil/gas is perfectly right. They want to keep China in bay is correct which is against our interest though. They don't want to keep india in bay, it's not feasible for them in current scenario. And protecting small nation is bogus...US doesn't have a bit of concern regarding this. Don't forget Noriega of Panama who was arrested by US forces and taken to USA. There are many such examples.

Small countries are generally inconsequential from the US point of view.

A strong Indian economy is not a liability for the US. It's an asset.

SCO is still taking baby steps. And its a sino-russian block. China will most likely form her own block in the near future and S.asian/ central asian and N.african countries fits this bill.

No, the US doesn't see us via indian lens but India wanted to make US look at us via Indian lens.
US have its own reasons for trying to cozy up with us and in the process India will get benefited
so some extent , that's all.
