The US Air Force is requesting USD2 million in additional funding that could accelerate fielding of its UH-1N replacement. Source: US Air Force
The US Air Force (USAF) has requested an additional USD2 million to accelerate the fielding process for the UH-1N Huey helicopter.
The USAF, in its fiscal year 2018 (FY18) unfunded priority list obtained by Jane's , said the additional money would allow nine environmental assessment studies to be conducted in all operating locations. The first four studies are funded in the FY19 program objective memorandum (POM), but the service said they can be executed earlier.
An environmental assessment is a key part of the Pentagon acquisition process and contains an estimate of whether a proposed system will adversely affect the environment or be environmentally controversial. If it is deemed controversial, an environmental impact statement (EIS) is prepared.
The unfunded priority list is a ranking of each service's programs that they would have liked to pay for with additional spending. These lists are often used by lawmakers to make decisions in the authorisation and appropriations processes.
The UH-1N has been service since 1970 and is used to not only protect the USAF's intercontinental ballistic missile sites in Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota, but also as VIP transport. There are 62 UH-1Ns in service and the USAF could purchase as many as 84 new platforms.
