US Air Force looks to dramatically extend F-15 service life

Boeing has launched a four-year structural analysis of the US Air Force F-15 fleet, with the aim of doubling to quadrupling the service lives of the two major variants.

The USAF has also revealed new interest in critical avionics and mission system upgrades for the 40-year-old airframe, as it seeks to keep at least some of its 414 F-15C/D fighters and F-15E fighter/bombers flying for decades to come.

A USAF F-15C fighter has already entered a four-year fatigue test cycle at Boeing's factory in St Louis, Missouri, said Brad Jones, the company's director of F-15 development programmes. It will be joined soon by an F-15E Strike Eagle.

Boeing's tests will determine if the service life of the F-15C/D can be extended from 9,000h to 18,000h, Jones said. The service life of the F-15E was originally set at 8,000h but could potentially be raised to 32,000h after the tests are complete.

If the USAF peacetime annual flight-hour average is set at 300h, the service life increase should keep both models flying for several more decades.

The fatigue tests will indicate possible sources of structural failures. Only four years ago, the USAF grounded its F-15Cs after a longeron failure caused one aircraft to disintegrate in flight. An investigation showed that longeron cracks were limited to a handful of F-15C/Ds, which were immediately retired.

The USAF is also considering a significant capability upgrade for the entire F-15 fleet. The aircraft now rely on three ageing systems for self-defence - the ALR-56C radar warning receiver, ALQ-135 jammer and ALE-45 countermeasures dispenser. On 20 November, the USAF issued a "sources sought" notice for a digital electronic warfare system.

Boeing is already proposing such a system developed by BAE Systems to export customers of the F-15 Silent Eagle.

The self-defence upgrade, which the USAF calls the eagle passive/active warning survivability system (EPAWSS), is included in the service's next five-year spending plan, but funding will not be assured until this year's final budget reviews are complete in January, Jones said.

If funded, the EPAWSS programme will follow USAF F-15 upgrades, including an active electronically scanned array radar and a new core processor, Jones said.

Preserving and upgrading the F-15 fleet would mark a sharp departure in USAF plans. Less than two years ago, Lockheed Martin officials talked openly of replacing the F-15E with the F-35A Lightning II.

The strike eagle is one deadly fighter and one of my fav good choice by the USAF to take this step.

.
Yet another indication for India not to succumb to F-35 offer when USA itself is not confident of its F-35 program and deadlines !!!

This is Intresting !

What abt 1000's of F-16's that USAF Have , are they being Upgraded ?

It makes sense, US economy is crumbling, F35 is delayed. However US and its fans loses chance to make fun of other countries outdated equipment, F15 is "40-year-old airframe" and expected to fly another ~20 years

No one is forcing you.

But you can consider it for the navy :azn:

It's still technically a great airplane. It has gone through many stages of development throughout the years.

there is no fighter in the US inventory which at present can replace the F15 . the f22 IS PLAGUED WITH HIGH COST AND SERVICING PROBLEMS. . f35 MAY NOT EVEN SEE SERVICE . WHAT ELSE HAVE THEY GOT TO FIELD IN LARGE NUMBERS.?

And you do not see the irony of you laughing at this development.

No one is challenging American air superiority anytime soon, even if F-35A does not replace the old F-15s. Simply put, the three best air forces in the world are:

1. USAF
2. USAF Reserve Command
3. US National Air Guard.

F-35A has already entered service in small numbers, and undergoing performance trials. F-35B has recently been tested on amphibious assault ships. I don't know where you got the idea F-35 may not see service.

If this is a general agreement among those who would dare to cast aside their emotions and examine the reasons behind this general agreement, what does that say about the rest when American 'weekend warriors' airmen are perceived to be the better of the foreign air forces?

just go through some of the recent threads on the is forum . you will get what i am saying .
there is a white paper published in Australia against buying the F35
the UK is also re looking at its f35 orders and are only ordering the VTOL version for their future carriers .
i doubt the US will also field the F35 in large enough numbers as it was planing .

it depends on which force you are referring too . for that matter the US CG is stronger then many navies . but as i said its relative and subjective to different countries.:)

The plan is to replace them all with F-35. However, that'll take time.

USA is still the big daddy :D

.
US does change its system time to time but thats not because they are unable to use or lived their life... Its because US replace them with latest and sometime sells the old technology to allies..... A frigate to Pakistan is an example.... If US is extending F15 life then it doesn't mean they are compromising on technology.... USAF think tank are smarter than us.....
