What's new

Upgraded Arjun Mark-II tanks undergoing trial at Pokhran

Indian army is already looking for T90MS.
I don't see any room of another tank in Indian arsenal. Indicting local faulty tanks in small numbers ......(118 Mk1, 124Mk2) indicate few lobbies still want to "earn" money by keeping the production lines of DRSO running.....
If Arjun is good enough then India must induct then in large numbers (300 per batch at least)
If it is not then better scrape it and go for more Russian tanks, like Armata........
few things

1. india is already in process of upgrading all its T72s to the level muhib e watan pakistanies want there so called AK2 be like

2.India already has a large fleet of T90S Bhishma MBTs

3.India alreay has 120 A MK1 & 40+MK2 while some 80 are already on order

4.DRDO is a research lab for R&D onli manufacturing of MBTs are done by HVF avadi

+ the fact ... kahi jane do abhi ke liye itna hi kafee hai :coffee:

@Oscar

Sir on Mk2 after mk1.
Yes it was decided to go for mk2 quickly because mk1 had some shortfalls.
No, no upgrade to mk2 is being worked upon as of now. Actually , as soon as the first 40 are operational, army will give another follow on order of about 90-100 tanks. In total about 250-300 mk2 would be built over a period of 5 years, starting 2015-2020.
Why we will not go for more than 300? Because by 2020, a lot will change and we will have access to better and improved technology.
Now coming to the shortfalls of mk2.....
You are free to believe me or not,
There are 2 problems, as of now, as explained to me by someone who was linked to mk1 and mk2 initial testings.
1. Its cost, the cost of Arjun is high, much more than T90, also its operational costs till now have been higher. Indian Army, (don't go for 40billion defence budget) have very little to spend on new purchases. Very little, so the scarce resources are being used for 1. Upgrading remaining T72s, 2. Buying new T90s and 3 . Buying new Mk2s.

2. The second problem with mk1, was spares.The spares were late, resulting in half of the mk1 unoperational at any given time. This has been worked upon, and significant improvements will be seen in next 6 months when the reports about operations of mk2 start coming.

And one more thing about its weight, let me be frank, yes its more. So what.... are Merkeva and M1 not working?

On Tejas, our nation was lagging. Nothing more nothing less. Dassault helped us to make an excellent platform, we ruined time again and again. We wasted about 20 years doing nothing about it, not even its screw and nuts.... It was always to be delayed. But all said, it is a very capable platform and quick production and subsequent upgrades will help, also getting in an private partner.
Thanks.

@Tipu7

Sir, T90MS, 300 of them are being provided for MSC only.

There is something seriously wrong when you need Mk2's right after a Mk1 and then upgrading those Mk2's before they even had some weaning in operational exercises. The Arjun is just another victim of the gutter pool that is project management at DRDO. An utter insult to Indian talent and finances and nothing more.

At leas the Tejas is a very capable platform that a victim of poor planning, but the Arjun is clearly lacking in even those respects.

Arjun lacks capability!!!! In what terms you are talking that?

These are not answers of My questions.
In presence of 1200+ T90 & more T90 on possible order. What is point of producing Arjun in small numbers? Why India do not place a big order for more homogeneity and cost effectiveness........

As per you answers....... I can just smile :-)

Just dump the project already... stick to russian weaponry.
Arjun is not licence produced version of MBT 2000 by NORINCO. First build a bike engine then talk.

Around 500 Arjun mk 2 are on order. And Arjun is much more powerful than T-90MS and thus costly. All of the current 128 tanks are stationed along Pakistan border in Rajasthan deserts.

But it is indeed largest contributor in Arjun program..........
DRDO doesn't manufacture tanks kid

You deliberately dragged AK in topic to make it hot but sadly I am lazy in typing stuff...... so I will not try to prove how much AK is non Chinese or how much Arjun is Indian...... :D

And saying that You guys are upgrading T72 to a level where AK2 is supposed to be...... I just say. Khuda ka ni to Bhagwan ka hi khoof kro, kesi btain kr rhe ho ...:partay: kbhi J10 PAF ka jet bun jata he, or kbhi T72 AK se age nikal jata he :lol:

well you can beleve in what you want but the fact is no matter what you think your AK-2 is not even compareable to the upgraded T-72s of india but then cheers mate :coffee:

@Dazzler @DESERT FIGHTER
Guess we should stop discussing AK vs T90 and start worrying about "upgraded" T72 & "Indigenous" Arjun tanks....... seems India is introducing 120mm Rail Gun as main gun, Points Laser defense as APS and Nanobot repair drones as armor plating.....

:lol:

looks like arjun MK2 gonna get indian army clearence for a "big deal" after all these years

as for armata looks more like its gonna wait for some time

there is a potential to slash 5 to 6 tons of weight without compromising the protection. Let us explore that. We had heard that one smooth bore gun was also in making.

Trolling do not required any knowledge.

Really? Check it out here....

Extract from an Israeli's view:

"Bloody hell the sheer energy at extended range in ft.lb delivered with accuracy is truly astonishing...i personally think this main gun is an accidental find for Indian's. The sabot round penetrated the hull of a T-55 derelict then went through the second one behind it and the place where it pierced the sand dune had a formation of glass crystals around the sand!

Why DRDO have troubles with Foreign tank then???

Its not a production agency

The Only Problem with "Arjun" is, Its being Treated like "Karna" since its appearance, Else we have much inferior machines with other Armed Forces, in production AS OF NOW.

This Speaks Volumes of its capability : Arjun tank outruns, outguns Russian T-90 | Business Standard News

Once has to Ask, Why does Navy with all "FIRST TIME IN INDIA" Projects, has Excelled from Importer to Exporter !

But, we forget We are in acountry where ACs ( During CWG ) were "rented" for over 10 times their Actual MRP !

Jai Ho !
