A new protection unit for marine facilities has been formed to prevent unauthorized entry near oil fields and other vital marine-based facilities, according to the Eastern Province Border Guard.
Capt. Omar Al-Aklabi, Border Guard media spokesman, said that the force is made up of a marine protection and coastal protection unit. Officers were chosen following strenuous and rigorous testing.
“Officers have been trained inside and outside the Kingdom by international experts in cooperation with maritime border patrols from the Institute of Border Guards in Makkah,” he said.
“They were trained to enhance marine engineering, law enforcement and shooting skills, in addition to brushing up on English language skills, increasing fitness levels, learning first aid and rescue operations and improving swimming skills. All of these programs were designed to develop, improve and evaluate security, marine and military competence to achieve a high level of readiness and preparedness.”
“Security units must be able to face threats, risks and security challenges out at sea so that they are able to effectively protect marine and vital infrastructure facilities,” he said.
A theory and test experience under the name “Sea anchor 2” was carried out by the security patrols and borders guards during the inauguration of Border Guard projects in the Eastern Province to test the capabilities and readiness of borders patrols in handling smuggling attempts by sea.
