The resolution calls on the three nations to also give up their ability to manufacture nuclear weapons.- ISPR/file
NEWYORK: A United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on working towards a nuclear-weapon-free-world on Wednesday called on Pakistan, India and Israel to voluntarily drop their nuclear weapons, said a report by Business Standard.

The report further stated that the resolution was passed to achieve a nuclear weapon-free world and the three nations were called upon to comply with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) unconditionally as non-nuclear-weapon states.

The resolution also asked Pakistan, India and Israel to keep their nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, meaning they must also give up their ability to manufacture nuclear weapons. The United States joined India in voting against this part of the resolution and Pakistan and Israel also voted against this provision. Meanwhile, France, Britain and Bhutan abstained from voting.

The provision was passed with 165 votes in the 193-member UNGA, with 21 countries absent.

Britain, Israel, North Korea and Russia also joined the US and India in voting against the overall resolution, but it passed with 169 votes, While Pakistan, China, Bhutan, Micronesia and Palau abstained from voting.

The report also states that this resolution and similar ones, are not binding under the UN Charter and are symbolic in nature. It mentions that in another resolution, the UNGA asked nations to take strong measures against terrorists having access to weapons of mass destruction.

One more resolution called for lowering the operational readiness of nuclear weapons to reduce international tension. According to the resolution, several thousand nuclear weapons have remained on high alert even after the end of the cold war. The resolution requested the five nuclear states to re-analyse the nuclear doctrines and take actions to lower the risk of the use of nuclear weapons.

What about saying the same thing to China?...I think India should be fine to drop nuclear weapon if its neighourhood is nuclear free...

Talk about double standards what about USA? You know Americans we Pakistanis who you think are all crazy fanatics haven't used our nuclear bombs, India hasn't, China hasn't. But guess who have? Who have the moral ground here?

us is against the resolution

As long as India has nuclear weapons, Pakistan will not give them up; Likewise, as long as China has nuclear weapons, India won't give them up.

The UNGA is wasting it's time and energy.

It has nothing to do with morality. The UN only recognizes 5 nuclear armed states, so everyone outside of the big 5 aren't allowed to own them. Yes, it's completely unfair and bias, but keep in mind the UN was created right after WW2, so everyone one of the UNSC permanent members (whom also happen to be the only legally recognized nuclear powers) were the winners of second world war.

Learn to read @Jaanbaz , don't know the full details but it looks like we voted against it while your country abstained from voting.

They are seriously out of their mind and out of their depth. Give up nuclear weapons, why? Did you dad provided us with one that we should just give it up. Pakistan will still maintain their nuclear arsenal even if the rest of the world gives up(which is next to impossible). So mind your damn business and work on issues such as Palestine, Kashmir the root cause of problems and wars and not nuclear weapons which act as a sort of deterrent against bully nations.

I think as a show of responsibility the UNSC permanent members should first do it. to set and example for the other three.:enjoy:

The UN is a lame duck organization. No one listens to it anymore.

So who will bell the cat first? Even if India destroys its nuclear stockpile, Pakistan will never as its an asymmetric environment where conventional military strength is concerned. There's no way Pakistan can play catch-up. So the only shield it has is nuclear weapons which is a great equalizer, never mind if they will never be used.

Just an important question i would like to raise ,Why no sanction`s on Israel (I need to understand what type of diplomacy they are in to ,hard facts is there a treaty they have signed or some thing.
