My Muslim friend (more like a brother to be honest) has suddenly discovered religion.

I am seeing this more strongly after the month of Ramadan.

Now he wants to learn Arabic so that he can read the Koran in the original language it was revealed in.

He has been speaking to misc maulanas etc. about coming to his house and teach him. Apparently they gave him a theological tongue lashing for having dogs in his house.

He was jokingly telling me that the maulanas if they actually landed at his place would believe they have reached the abode of the dajjal, what with whiskey bottles and beer cans all around, and photos of Hindu Gods alongside the holy verse (which is with the holy sword, I forget the name). Not to mention his multiple tattooed torso and legs, and his penchant for some really weird and dark music.

All well and good so far. Now he has decided to enroll into an institute. I am just concerned about him getting radicalized.

What are the precautions? What are the signs to look out for? Is there anything I can do from my side?

I don't want to lose him. And I am seeing worrying signs of too much interest in religion happening. Which from my experience on PDF is a first warning sign, red flag.

I agree your concern..But i think Muslim rightwing is just using this BJP's ascendancy to power to justify their own crooked thing...To be honest, do you really beleive that with Ghar Wapasi, millions of Muslims will be Hindus??? If you really believe it, then you are far from reality...Buy yes, it is true that more and more BJP has a say in Indian politics, it will try to lean towards Cultural Hinduism and Sufi version of Islam..

It is not the Hindu facism but possibility of it that fuels insecurity. When the PM and HM make issues of attending an Iftar party, a line that their own parent organizations (which Modi called his Mother) then what does the average man on the street think? You cannot induce insecurity and then say it should not matter.

I agree with you. Its causing unease. Not yet fear.

Its also causing a degree of hurt.

Justified in many cases.

But what do I know. I don't claim to have all of India's Muslims as my friends. Less than a handful really, and birds of a feather do flock together.

Dude, this is a country overwhelming Hindu presence. If a muslim walks down a road and only 2 people of the 1000s that walk it say something, even then it'll be disturbing to them. If said people later go on to gain power and every 'Bhakt' makes it a point to say that 'pseudo secular', 'hindutva' and stuff like that they will feel completely overwhelmed. This phase will pass, because Modi's and BJPs popularity is declining. But until it reaches a lower threshold you should expect some upheaval.

You should not be concerned if he wants to learn arabic - its a beautiful language with a lot of history

You should also not be concerned if he wants to do that to understand the koran better - again - its his choice.

He had the tattoos by his choice - he can remove them by his choice.

If he wants to stop having alcohol for religious purposes - thats again his choice.

You should only be concerned if you have a valid reason to think that he is a threat to the any other human being or the society. Merely learning another language, trying to be according to the koran while being part of the good side of the society (i.e: not harming anyone).

If you are scared of him learning another language or you think all moulanas are brain washers - then thats part of the prejudice you need to work on yourself.

Personally, I am against all religions and anything non-scientific. But it is not my place to ell someone how they should think for themselves about life. It is for them to discover on their own. However, I will act if there is threat to myself or anyone else from this particular person.

But your advise of taking a call IF he becomes a threat is scaring me. Because

1) He is my friend. I obviously don't want him to become any such thing

2) Once he is a threat, its already to late and there is only one course of action

I think only threat he posses to himself if any.Put him away from mullahs and let him learn Arabic and read from THE book.
