My Muslim friend (more like a brother to be honest) has suddenly discovered religion.

I am seeing this more strongly after the month of Ramadan.

Now he wants to learn Arabic so that he can read the Koran in the original language it was revealed in.

He has been speaking to misc maulanas etc. about coming to his house and teach him. Apparently they gave him a theological tongue lashing for having dogs in his house.

He was jokingly telling me that the maulanas if they actually landed at his place would believe they have reached the abode of the dajjal, what with whiskey bottles and beer cans all around, and photos of Hindu Gods alongside the holy verse (which is with the holy sword, I forget the name). Not to mention his multiple tattooed torso and legs, and his penchant for some really weird and dark music.

All well and good so far. Now he has decided to enroll into an institute. I am just concerned about him getting radicalized.

What are the precautions? What are the signs to look out for? Is there anything I can do from my side?

I don't want to lose him. And I am seeing worrying signs of too much interest in religion happening. Which from my experience on PDF is a first warning sign, red flag.

Didn't you post this thread earlier? got deleted?

I posted this in the Whatever thread, thinking the admins did not feel it warranted a separate thread.

Did not know they finally let the thread through.

What kind of discussion are you expecting???

I read your post earlier, same guy who wants to visit Karbala, I'm guessing ? I wouldn't be too worried, even if he becomes a radical and goes to Iraq he'll probably fight against the Islamic State, which, imo, is kind of a noble warrior type thing to do.

If he was sunni, I'd report his *** to the police, army, CBI, IB, and every level of government I could reach. Extremist sunnis heading to Iraq :astagh:

also, what kind of weird, dark music is he into ?

You are right. He would probably fight alongside the Kurds. LOL

He's not going anywhere man. He had one Kingfisher Strong and laughed and told me he was yanking my chain (he knows I post here, and we discuss Pakistanis and their views etc.).

I want to learn how they radicalise man.

What do they say to you (not you personally)?

How do doctors and software geeks and architects get sucked in?

in south asia generally, the mullah is not questioned but seen to be expert in the religion because most people don't bother to read quran in its original form and as book of solutions.

except for afghanistan, south asia never had a full-fledged socialist revolution at country level and this allowed the priests ( all religions ) to be a primary source of "moral" guidance, even among muslims where there is no priest system.

among many middle-class "muslims" india, there is also the fear of being minority which gets them to group under the religion umbrella and listen to whatever nonsense the "expert" mullahs say.

But what do they say. :)

the discussion here is hurting my Sunni heart.

aside from that, try to convince him to read Quran (if he wants to) on his own, read books on religion on his own, i assure you if you can convince him to do this, and keep him AWAY FROM MULLAHS, he will NOT be radicalized, k?

But he has gotten it into his head that reading it in any other language will be tinged by the geographical/cultural bias of the linguistic translator who wrote it.

He wants to read THE book. THE words. And then make his own judgments accordingly. I don't think he would go to Mullas for explanations. I was referring to learning Arabic, which in my city is taught by Mullas mainly.

You have already lost him, in all likelihood. Let him go his way.
