UN Slaps Sanctions On Iran

.
iran is a self sufficent nation with the world's third largest supply of oil. i don't think any sanctions will effect iran in a significant way.

I agree the current sanctions are not enough. However Iran is far from self sufficient. It's most vulnerable area is Gasoline. Iran can only produce 10 1/2 million gallons of gasoline a day, and Iranian motorists burn 17 million gallons. This is were the sanctions need to target.

agreed on the bold part
but it's fixable. During shah's time we had no problems. Two factors completely changed the situation and nothing could be done about it. The war destroyed a huge amount of infrastructure and with the sanctions we had a hard time repairing what was damaged. Also the supply had to also deal w/ the RAPID population increase. We went from 30 mil to almost 80 million in 30 years!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I think the dumb mullahs are starting to build refineries and take other measures to stop waste and cut down on usage. It's totally fixable. The US will never in a billion years be able to convince the world to sanction our oil and gas b/c it would simply be stupid for countries like China. I don't know if we get refined gasoline from China but lets use them as an example. Why would China shoot itself in the foot by stopping the sale of gasoline to Iran???? That's why the US has always been shown the middle finger by Russia and China when it comes to actual tough sanctions.

A movie made by the Americans, filmed in Morocco and played by White actors and actresses, no thanks!
I've heard that they actually didn't insult Iranians for once but I still can't sit down and watch an American movie about Iran and its history.

.
It's america's hypocrary.if they r against nuke's they should leave up their's or else they don't have the right to talk abt it.

.
All countries should abide by IAEA rules and regulations and Israel should also be included and sanctioned. If sanctions are only for muslim countries then time has come to quit the damn UN (UN stands for Unnecessary Nonsense).

OIC needs to stronger and all muslim countries need to provide troops to build OIC Force just like UN Troops.

Dialogue only solution to Iran nuclear program: Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said that issue related to Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through reconciliation and the international community should hold dialogue in this regard.

While talking to DawnNews on Wednesday, the Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that Iran has the right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program, however, Iran should rectify the concerns shown by the international community.

Basit said that the issue could only be resolved through dialogue and added that sanctions would only increase tensions.

Answering a question, he said that there was no pressure on Pakistan regarding the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project and that the fresh sanctions imposed on Iran will not affect the project.—DawnNews

China and Russia has officially dumped Iran.

Although i have all sympathy with the innocent Iranian people but the Iranian regime reacts to situations like they are on drugs.

For example Iran has been extraordinarily rude towards Pakistan.

Mr. Thomas why should the sanctions target the Gas consumption part of the Iranian populous. Why should there be sanctions at the first place, basically the argument is that the Iranians cant have N.Weapons. Then why should any one else be allowed to have them as well. Why you guys who are notorious for starting wars, and changing regimes. The Russians, lets not talk about them. The Chinese, the Indians, the Pakistanis, the Brits, the French. Why any one. And specially the israelies, hell they have not only violated more human rights, then any one else collectively, they have also violated more UN resolutions then any other nation. So if all of the others dont deserve sanctions, why Iran. And lets not forget what Iran today is! Is Thanks to uncle sam any ways.

Russia is freezing a contract to deliver S-300 air defence missiles to Iran after the adoption of the new UN sanctions against Tehran, a source told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.
Russia agreed the deal on the missiles several years ago but has never delivered the weapons, amid pressure from the United States and Israel which fear they would dramatically improve Iran's defensive capabilities.
"It is compulsory to fulfill a decision by the UN Security Council and Russia is not an exception here," said the source in the Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation (FSVTS), which supervises Russian arms sales.
"Naturally, the contract for the delivery to Tehran of the S-300 air defence missile systems will be frozen," added the source, who was not named.
The resolution, agreed Wednesday by UN Security Council members including Russia, bars countries from selling Iran heavy weaponry including missiles and missile systems.
Russia's failure to deliver the missiles has disappointed Iran's Islamic leadership and become a major sticking point in once strong bilateral ties.
Konstantin Kosachev, head of the foreign affairs committee on Russia's lower house of parliament, meanwhile said that while weapons sales restrictions had been expanded under the sanctions they did not include the S-300s.
"Systems of a defensive nature like the S-300 are not on this list," he told Interfax.
The head of the FSVTS Mikhail Dmitriyev meanwhile told the ITAR-TASS news agency that "work on the contract is continuing" and was unaffected by the resolution.
However it does not appear that the UN Security Council resolution makes a distinction between offensive and defensive heavy weaponry.
"Of course, it's now impossible to talk about this contract being realised," said Russian defence expert Ruslan Pukhov, director of the centre for strategic and technical analysis.
"It will be frozen," he told Interfax. "The same thing can be said about other plans for Russian-Iranian military-technical cooperation that come under the sanctions," he said.
Pukhov said Russia would also no longer be able to provide after-sales service for the 29 TOR-M1 short-range surface-to-air missiles than Russia delivered to Iran in early 2007.
The TOR-M1 sale, estimated to be worth 700 million dollars, delighted Iran's military but was slammed at the time as inappropriate by the United States.
The S-300 sale is particularly controversial as Western powers fear Iran would use the sophisticated systems to protect its most sensitive nuclear sites against an aerial attack and inflict heavy casualties on the enemy.
Analysts and diplomats have suggested that the delivery of the weapons so worries Israel that the Jewish state could launch a pre-emptive strike against Iran if it has intelligence that Russia was to deliver them.
There was intense speculation that the Arctic Sea cargo ship which disappeared for several days last year and Russia said was hijacked could have been carrying an illicit cargo of S-300s to Iran.
However these reports were vehemently denied by Russian officials.

The interesting part would be why would Lebanon abstain and not vote against?.

You do not understand the mechanics of sanctions. All a US President has to do is issue an Executive Order that say: 'If any foreign corporation that deals with US wants to continue access to the US market, said foreign corporation must stop dealing business with Iran (or even including China).' By the time of this EO, the President has already forbid US companies to deal with the targeted country. This foreign company now faces a dilemma. The US market is the largest chunk of its income and a proven stable consumer of its product, whatever it is, while Iran is still developing the necessary consumer base for that particular product. Which is the greater revenue loss? The US President may even offer an incentive -- Stop dealing business with Iran and the US will remove the tariff on this foreign company's product for X-years. The answer is obvious -- Dump Iran. The options for a US President, based solely on the US market's purchasing power, is quite unlimited. Do not mistake the weakness of one administration for the next. Obama may be spineless but the next US President may be B43 redux.

Which means Iran will not be able to purchase the Chinese version as well.
