Interpreter: Two-thirds of Ukrainians want to join NATO and be inside ‘borders of civilized world' - read on - uatoday.tv

Number of supporters of Ukraine's NATO integration has increased after Russia invaded Donbas

Sixty-four percent of Ukrainians say they want to join the Western alliance, according to a new poll conducted by the Kucheriv Democratic Initiative and the Razumkov Center. And they want to, Vitaly Portnikov says, because its borders are today the borders of the civilized world that no aggressor would even think about attacking.

In a comment for Radio Liberty today, the Ukrainian analyst says, for many years, it seemed unthinkable that so many Ukrainians would make that choice. Sixty-four percent – almost two out of three – was a figure that "seemed unachievable" but now it is destined to rise even further.

"The Russian invasion of Ukraine has destroyed all Soviet propaganda myths, which for many years remained the chief discourse in relation to the majority of citizens of Ukraine about their own security," Portnikov says.

That is because, contrary to what Moscow had insisted, "It was not NATO that attacked Ukraine but ‘fraternal' Russia. And it was not NATO that tried to ‘draw in' Ukraine into its military operations but Ukrainians themselves who wanted NATO countries to get involved in a war which Russia is conducting."

Read also Poll: Ukrainians split on visa regime for Russia, joining NATO, but very negative about Russian government

"NATO has clearly shown," Portnikov continues, "that it can guarantee the security of those who join it: an aggressor will not even think about violating the borders of the civilized world. But unfortunately, Ukrainians are still outside these borders." Had they been within them in the past, the present would be very different.

Defense Minister of Ukraine Colonel-General Stephen Poltorak attended a meeting of the National Security and Defense of Ukraine by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.- Today the meeting has a historical character. For the first time it involved a great friend Ukraine - Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty, - said the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, opening the meeting.

The President of Ukraine stressed the challenges in time of war: "The threat of Russian invasion, the threat of continued aggression does not disappear. Unfortunately, we have to live with it for years, "- he said. Therefore the immediate goal must be to Ukrainian Armed Forces, which are already among the strongest on the continent in a more efficient and effective formation. This should be done in cooperation with NATO, which thus invest in their own security. In fact, supporting Ukraine, NATO strengthens its position on the eastern border.

"By investing in Ukraine, in its security sector, they do not spend money to help other countries, and invest in its security sector", - said Poroshenko.- Ukraine - is the eastern outpost of Euro-Atlantic civilization and today not only protects its own sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence, but fighting for freedom and democracy in the region and the world, - stressed the President of Ukraine.

Ukraine joining NATO is no alternative.- When we create all the conditions by reforming countries to meet the country's criteria for NATO membership, I will be decided on a national referendum.

And so it will be fixed will of the Ukrainian people, - he said.
