Along with the MS-110 pod the UAE defense deals announced yesterday included a contract for Tawazun Dynamics to supply the P3 guided bomb for use on the Mirage 2000.
UAE’s ministry of defense announced at the Dubai Airshow 2017 that it has ordered the MS-110 reconnaissance pod from UTC Aerospace Systems/Goodrich. The deal is worth $140 million and covers an unspecified number of pods. The UAE is the first customer for the multi-spectral derivative of Goodrich’s DB-110 dual-band sensor system that has been acquired by more than a dozen F-16 operators, as well as being operational on the F-15, Tornado and P-3 Orion. The UAE air force already operates the DB-110 on its F-16s.

The UAE air force’s other fighter community—which flies the Dassault Mirage 2000—is also benefiting from recent deals through the placing of a $120 million order for the P3 guided bomb from Tawazun Dynamics. This new weapon is being shown for the first time at the Dubai show, both on the Tawazun Dynamics stand and under the Calidus B-250 in the static park.

In other deals announced on the second day of the Dubai air show Global Aerospace Logistics was awarded a contract worth nearly $400 million to provide logistics and maintenance support for UAE Joint Aviation Command helicopters, while Advanced Integrated Systems received a $130 million contract to provide support services for an unspecified reconnaissance aircraft. Maximus Air received a follow-on contract to provide heavylift support for a further two years, while SCG was contracted for UAV services.

In fact, the DB-110 is a real gain. As mentioned, it serves several air forces in the region, but the MS-110 is the newcomer and the new generation of the DB family and the UAE Air Force as the operator of the best systems is the first customer of this pod from UTC Aerospace Systems.

The MS-110 Pod will have the same size and measurements but is lighter than the DB-110 Pod..

The MS-110 Pod will operate on an infrared range larger than the DB-110 Pod and works on an additional 5 spectral waves..

Like Pod DB-110, the new MS-110 will give multispectral imaging with a color-coded interface that can accurately identify the ground-like details being modelled on the Pod-DB-110, which only provides gray-scale imaging.. images that make it difficult to check to determine ground objectives. So the cover, the shadows and the dust-covered blankets will not be a barrier to the new pod, which is so precise that it can detect any explosive devices planted on the ground..

It is noteworthy that the DB-110 Pod at a height of 40 thousand feet (12 km) can scan and photograph a total of 200 miles (320 kilometers) across the horizon to give an accurate picture of the ground plane..

UTC Promotes new MS-110 Recce Pod

UTC Aerospace Systems promoted its latest range of multi-spectral airborne reconnaissance pods at Paris Air Show 2017 with senior company officials claiming that within the next four years, most global customers will have made the switch to the technology type.

Speaking to MONS at the event on 20 June, Vice President and General Manager for Airborne Systems, Kevin Raftery, highlighted UTC’s latest product, the MS-110, which represents a fourth generation variant of its legacy DB-110 payload.

Airborne sensors can be integrated on board a variety of aircraft including fast air platforms, such as the Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) TORNADO as well as slow-movers. According to Raftery, MS-110 payloads provide double the coverage area of legacy solutions with more than three times information collection.

The MS-110 comprises a total of seven channels integrated into the single payload, including Visible and InfraRed technologies associated with legacy DB-110 but with the added benefit of being able to exploit Bands 1-7 across the Electro-Magnetic Spectrum (EMS).

The only difference between the DB-110 and MS-110 is packaging with the latter actually lighter than its predecessor while retaining the same form factor,” Raftery explained to MONS while suggesting an easy transition for customers seeking to upgrade solutions.

Ground support and spare parts are also exactly the same for both systems for reduced logistics, meaning it is less intrusive for the soldier,” he added while describing how processing, exploitation and dissemination (PED) could be conducted from the same ground control station.

Additionally, Raftery explained how the company was pursuing multiple avenues to integrate the MS-110 on board unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with ongoing evaluation being conducted in collaboration with the US Air National Guard and RAF. “We are working with General Atomics on this effort,” Raftery noted.

Raftery explained how the company was currently manufacturing MS-110 for an undisclosed launch customer with initial deliveries expected to be delivered for integration on board a fast air platform towards the end of 2018.
