The UAE has announced compulsory military service for all males between the ages of 18 and 30.

The move was announced by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, on Twitter. Sheikh Mohammed said that the country’s cabinet had endorsed the plan, although there is no indication when the rules will take effect. The length of service is set to be two years for those without high school degrees, and nine months for those who have graduated from high school.

Military service will be optional for women.

“A reserve force for the UAE will be made up of those who have completed their national service, as well as members of the military who have finished their service in the armed forces,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

In November, Qatar announced that All Qatari men aged between 18 and 35 will soon be forced to undertake up to four months compulsory military service if a new government draft law is given the green light by authorities, according to a report by the AFP news agency.

The new legislation will require four months compulsory service for all men within the age bracket, while university graduates will only be expected to serve three months, the report said.

@Bubblegum Crisis @Yzd Khalifa @JUBA @al-Hasani

After Qataris and Emiraties, its your turn. Time to lift your fatass and become a conscript. -- wouldn't that be a sight ! :D

Seriously? This is interesting...maybe for economic reasons?

Although I have a question, does this apply to people who don't have citizenship? I have Palestinian cousins who live in the UAE and were born there but don't have citizenship.

Will they be required to do military service?

All Palestinians, living there, are UAE(ers). If you happen to know someone who isn't then they most likely are holding something similar to the green card which makes them citizens.

Do you know what 'Muwatin' is? This is apparently what I understood was the legitimate citizenship there.

My cousins have 'Iqamahs' which is what most non UAE people have there. Being born there didn't get them citizenship, they still use Palestinian authority passports.

I happen to know a few Palestinian friends of mine, all are citizens of the UAE, at the same time some of them happen to hold US, Palestinian passports.

you will be "volunteered" for your country!
??????????????????????????? What do you mean? :what:

I'm not sure, my cousins parents were not born in the UAE but they the children were. They only have 'Iqahmahs'.

Maybe @Arabian Legend can elaborate on this?

Unfortunately having Iqama doesn't grant you to join the military service, you have to be a citizen in order meet the requirements.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, so my cousins aren't required military service.

usually armed forces are comprised of volunteers, and one would say "I volunteered for my nation"(out of once own will). With compulsory service, you are forced to serve the country, hence "will be volunteered".

but what is possible threat to UAE ? ? why so much weapons and military ? do they have any enemies though ?

Whats with the stupid question again and again? The most unstable part of the world is the Middle East and the GCC states are not immune if a war breaks out in the region so have to be prepared for any scenario. Why do we need an enemy to build a military power? GCC are one entity an attack on one state is an attack on the rest.
