U.S. officials have urged China to cease development of anti-satellite capabilities after their assessments revealed the Asian country has recently tested an anti-satellite missile, SpaceNews reported Monday.

Mike Gruss reports that defense and intelligence officials see such weaponry as threats to U.S. and other nations’ space assets.

“We call on China to refrain from destabilizing actions — such as the continued development and testing of destructive anti-satellite systems — that threaten the long term security and sustainability of the outer space environment, on which all nations depend,” the State Department said in an email to SpaceNews.

“The United States continuously looks to ensure its space systems are safe and resilient against emerging space threats.”

Gruss writes that a report from China’s Xinhua news agency last week has indicated a completed missile intercept test.

They just don't want countries testing anti-Satellite weapons due to this horrible situation
Kessler syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Is a scenario in which the density of objects in low earth orbit (LEO) is high enough that collisions between objects could cause a cascade—each collision generating space debris which increases the likelihood of further collisions. One implication is that the distribution of debris in orbit could render space exploration and even the use of satellites unfeasible for many generations"

The test in July wasn't ASAT, but an anti-ICBM midcourse test, even China's official media has addressed this very clearly.

Why the US media just keeps spinning it as an ASAT test? Now this is becoming quite annoying as so many US politicians crying like a bunch of whining b1tches.

They want a bigger budget, are genuinely scared or both.

The anti-ICBM test is supposed to be scarier than the ASAT test.

I think they are trying to do the damage control. How can China become better than the US in this area?

Sorry Anti ICBM n the atmosphere is not scarier than more orbital debris.

Damage control? How many tests have you done? How many tests have the U.S. done? Don't think you became better at it. That be like Russians pointing out that our BMD is dangerous to national security or something. Or is it?

Three open anti-ICBM midcourse tests, not including many hidden tests.

Our successful spree has received too much envy from you guys.

There is nothing hidden from U.S. Space Command. The Chinese didn't reveal the anti-satellite test back in 2007 until the U.S. mentioned it while the Chinese stayed quiet. Because they knew what the world reaction will be.

This only means that China had actually more successful tests, but only not being revealed to the public.

We prefer to keep everything in low profile in general.

No it doesn't. The U.S. would have easily mentioned it.

You aren't gong to laughing when debris hits your space station.

Those dummy ICBMs were probably getting smashed into million of pieces by the KKV/EKV.

And I don't those extremely small debris can do much damage.

The US didn't mention a lot of things, it is the typical damage control behavior.

Do you realize the space shuttle was hit in the window by a speck of paint leaving a crater?
