Yes, the US has been the main driver of innovation for the past 150 years. However China is also coming of age because of a confluence of STEM labor resources, capital, domestic market and infrastructure. This did not exist in China before until now.

Western Europe became the hub of innovation and centre of the world 300 or so years back. The US took that lead 100-150 years back.

However, Chinese Americans have also contributed more than their share to America's technological edge today and that is undeniable. In addition, we are talking about the future. While the US still retains significant advantages in many areas of research capabilities and technology, China is becoming a formidable challenger because of a confluence of STEM skills, capital, market forces and infrastructure. Cupertino is the heart of the Chinese community in the South Bay. Chinese far outnumber Vietnamese in the tech industry and from maybe 2009 to 2017 were the main drivers in luxury real estate purchases in Silicon Valley. A simple look at the title records for sales in Palo Alto during that period (average home price $2.6 million) would reveal 70% of the buyers being Chinese, mainly Mainland origin.

Many of the Vietnamese in the South Bay were refugees from the Vietnam war who settled in poorer parts of San Jose. They have done well for themselves and there is a big Vietnamese community in the South Bay. There aren't many Chinese in Chicago. Most are located in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, especially the recent immigrants.
