Human rights activists saw al-Nimr not as an insurgent but as a dissenter and were appalled at the sentence.

Amnesty International said the case against him was part of a systematic effort by the majority Sunni government to crush Shia voices.

His execution prompted the U.S. State Department to call on Saudi Arabia to respect human rights and permit peaceful dissent.

"We are particularly concerned that the execution of (al-Nimr) risks exacerbating sectarian tensions at a time when they urgently need to be reduced," spokesman John Kirby said.

In response to the Saudi foreign minister's announcement severing ties with Iran on Sunday, Kirby said the United States believes diplomatic engagement is essential and "will continue to urge leaders across the region to take affirmative steps to calm tensions."

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini said al-Nimr's case raised "serious concerns regarding freedom of expression and the respect of basic civil and political rights."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was "deeply dismayed" by the executions and called again for an end to the death penalty. He called on leaders in the region to prevent an escalation of sectarian tensions.

CNN's Elise Labott, Azadeh Ansari, Michael Pearson, Shirzad Bozorgmehr, Salma Abdelazziz, Richard Roth, Steve Almasy, Sara Mazloumsaki and Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.

If Iranians are jumping on US Critisizm of Saudi Arabia then why are they whining and crying on US backing of Syrian rebels??? And above all why arent Iranians themselves allowing peaceful dissident in their borders?? Checkmate??

The topic should be, "Which countries haven't been Criticized by US?" :sarcastic:

Einstein, Saudi is ally of US, and US is often silent about barbarous actions of Saudi. Yet in this case US criticized Saudi.
Tgere's a hell of difference between Sheikh Nemer whose movement was was completely peaceful and anti-violence and the post-Election development in Iran.

US is often silent, and follow a double standard policy, regarding its allies, especially when it comes to democracy, human rights and terrorism, a notable recent case being Bahrain.

This is just like we take out maulana radio and Afghanistan and India go into a frenzy.
The kind of over reaction that cane from Iran shows nothing bit the fact that this fella was who the saudis had claimed all along. An instigator, towing Iran's line.

Barack Obama's administration should not be taken seriously when it comes to Middle Eastern affairs.

This is the same administration that was supporting the destructive Muslim Brotherhood when they ran rampage in Egypt.

KSA like any sovereign nation is free to execute its own citizens when they are condemned of murder and terrorism.

The American government also criticized death sentences given to terrorists in Egypt. Nothing new sadly. The US themselves are executing numerous people each year. Also occasionally under dubious circumstances.

We never hear such hypocrisy from China or Russia.

Which would you prefer then, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump?
Donald trump, because i would love to see if he keeps his word. and even if he does he cant as it breaks the constitution in some of his cases.
besides he will run the country to the ground. the republican party is $h!t scared if he wins and if he does they will be something in place to rein him in.
hillary is just like bill

this is not the first and definitely will not be the last- Go Saudi-

Do you actually read what I say? It is natural that US side with Saudi in their crimes as they are allies. What is abnormal and takes everyones attention is that even Saudi allies who oftem follow double standard policies are condemning Saudi over this execution (read assassination).
