WASHINGTON: The Obama administration has appealed to China to provide training and even military equipment to help Pakistan counter a growing militant threat, U.S. officials said.

According to Los Angeles Times, the proposal is part of a broad push by Washington to enlist key allies of Pakistan in an effort to stabilize the country. The U.S. is seeking to persuade Islamabad to step up its efforts against militants, while supporting the fragile civilian government and its tottering economy.

Richard C. Holbrooke, the administration's special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, has visited China and Saudi Arabia, another key ally, in recent weeks as part of the effort.

The American appeal to China underscores the importance of Beijing in security issues. Washington considers China to be the most influential country for dealing with isolated, militaristic North Korea. Beijing also plays a crucial role in the international effort to pressure Iran over its nuclear ambitions.

China traditionally has been reluctant to intervene in the affairs of other countries.

However, Chinese officials are concerned about the militant threat to its west, fearing it could destabilize the region and threaten China's growing economic presence in Pakistan.

U.S. officials believe China is skilled at counterinsurgency, a holdover of the knowledge gained during the country's lengthy civil war that ended with a communist victory in 1949. And with its strong military ties to Pakistan, U.S. officials hope China could help craft a more sophisticated strategy than Islamabad's heavy-handed approach.

Interesting.. but we've already been doing that for God knows how long... Both China and Pakistan have been sharing and trading military equipment for quiet some time so this isn't something new.... The one thing i am against is Saudi Involvement.. the further we move away from them the better.. i don't see anything positive coming out of Saudia Arabia.. i don't like their intentions in any way or form..

Here's a LINK to the entire article.

In the future, Abdulrafi, it'd be appreciated if you'd link or attribute the article. It's considerably longer than what you've simply posted here.

China don not want to be the world Polize,
We just want to do business with each other.
Pakistan is our friend, If they have any difficulties ,
I think we will be happy to do some thing .
But just for Pakistan's government's ask,

I don't think that this should be put out by America.

America make trouble all over the world,
They had asked china to send troops in afghanstan,
and now they also ask china to get into Pakistan.

There is only one reason that they want China to pay for the fee in
their military activities.
But China is not Japan, We will not do some thing for America.

“U.S. officials believe China is skilled at counterinsurgency, a holdover of the knowledge gained during the country's lengthy civil war that ended with a communist victory in 1949.”

It still hasn’t been convincingly demonstrated to date that American experts have thoroughly studied and thereupon been able to understand China to a somehow decent degree.

According to Mao’s CPC “people’s war” concept, the army and its leaders must root themselves deeply within the people of grass-root: the vastest mass (before 1949, they were frequently poor, uneducated and underprivileged), and to make the mass be convinced that this is the army that fights for their concrete interest (social rights, land, etc). Only this achieved, will the army be invincible, as the people are the army and the army is the people (in a so-called fish-water relationship). This is actually the name PLA comes from.

Chinese army was successful in applying this concept in its Civil War, Korea War, Sino-India conflict in 1962, and to some lesser extent in conflict with Vietnam. This is also why US army failed in Vietnam War, and to some extent in Korea War.

The Chinese and the Pakistani have very different culture, tradition and life concept. Does PLA really know what the majority of the folks in the area want? How to launch a persuasive propaganda to change/compromise their view if what they want are not realistic or false (of course in the PLA's perspective)? How could PLA’s entry of the area benefit them in a concrete manner that the tribes love to see? ... All these directly result the most crucial come-out to win the quest: How can PLA seamlessly bind itself with tribal folks in NWFP and FATA?

Many political problems cannot be solved just by military means. If there is no available political solution to the problems, military intervention is of not much help.

IMO, with many additional legitimate concerns (such as those mentioned by jetLi), the likelihood that China would act is extremely slim.
