why put further resources into 052 series with 052E/EA, instead of 055 follow-on series?

I mean why don't just try on the new IEP system on some trial ship? once it's ok, just invest it into more 055B and so on?

If you have Cruiser capable Warships (Chinese Designates their Type 055 as Destroyer, even Type 055 have Capabilities as Cruiser)
Doesn't mean you will not building smaller Warships (like Destroyer-Type 052D/E and Frigate-Type 054A/B).

Just like US, maybe they have Tico Cruiser, but that doesn't stops them from building AB Destroyer, which is smaller.

But the USN indeed stopped building the frigate class vessels and instead turned into the premium littoral combat ship (LCS) class, which is now they are regretting and looking for the repentance...

Btw this kind of question about "why PLAN keeps on building 052X class when the 055 series have been made available" keeps on popping up from time to time... akin to the similar ones "why still building corvette when the more advanced frigates are available" or "why frigates when DDG are there"

One of the main explanations is PLAN ain't rich enough, unlike the USN, to assign the smaller naval tasks using the bigger assets.

Actually, the US Navy is building new frigates.

I said this once before and I'll say it again.

Frigates = naval light tanks
Destroyers = naval medium tanks
Cruisers = naval heavy tanks

It would be inefficient to dispatch a more expensive naval unit when the job can be accomplished by a less-expensive naval unit. Not every task requires a cruiser or destroyer.

For example, China patrols the South China Sea with Type 056 Corvettes/Light Frigates. This requires less manpower than heavier naval units. It accomplishes the job of establishing China's military control of the Nine Dash Line.

If more firepower is needed, heavier naval units from Yulin Naval Base (located near Sanya City on Hainan Island) will be dispatched to deal with the problem.
