There is a very similar variant to this, called the Type 59G.

The Type 96G will remain as the primary armored vehicle for the next few years. The Type 96G is about on the same level as the Type 99.

That is for Bangladesh. They have ordered 300 yet still want 96s. Goes to show you you can only upgrade a old tank so much.

I'm wondering what kind of armor the Type 96 has.

In addition, I think strategic mobility of the 96 is more important than the raw firepower of Type 99. Against South Korea, our main weapon other than the tank is our air force, same for Japan and Taiwan. Against India, we probably will never fight, and even if we do, we need to airlift and trainlift tanks over to Tibet. The Type 99 seems only useful against Russia, which we hopefully will never fight either, or a US ground invasion.

It is important, however, as probably an experimental or technical reserve.
