An 18-year-old girl was gunned down and her friend injured by an attender of a private college after storming into their hostel room in Bengaluru.

Police Commissioner MN Reddi said on Wednesday that one girl was shot dead and another was seriously injured in a shootout taken place at Pragathi College, Kadugodi on Tuesday night.

Police Commissioner Reddi said the deceased has been identified as Gouthami (17), a IInd PUC student from Pavagada. The Commissioner said the postmortem of the deceased Gouthami was completed and her mortal remains were taken to her native Pavagada. “Sireesha, who was seriously injured in the shootout, has been admitted to Manipal Hospital for treatment and she is out of danger,’’ the Police Commissioner said.

Congratulating Additional Commissioner Police P Harisekharan, Dr Rohini Katoch Sepat, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East Division for nabbing Mahesh within 24 hours of the crime, the Police Commissioner said: “I want to congratulate the Additional Commissioner of Police P Harisekharan and Dr Rohini Katoch Sepat, Deputy Commissioner of Police for successfully nabbing the accused. The police have nabbed him from his sister’s house at B Narayanapura near Old Madras Road and seized a country-made pistol and six bullets (9 mm). The accused was found hiding at his sister’s house. He hails from Kendala Bayalu near Agumbe in Shivamogga district.

The 38-year-old accused has no parents and it was said that he had been to native place a few days ago. As soon as the complaint lodged at Kadugodi Police Station by Kalyani, the warden of Pragathi College, we have formed five police teams to nab the accused. One police team has already left for native of the accused,’’ he said.

When asked what has made Mahesh to indulge in shooting at the girls, he said that the accused wanted to dominate the girls and used to impose rules and insist them not to speak with others. “The girls used to object him stating that he is nobody to control them,’’ the police commissioner said.

He said the police have registered a case under Sections 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 25 and 27 of Indian Arms Act against the accused Mahesh. "The police have interrogated the accused for few hours to know the source of the country-made pistol and where he had bought it and who has sold it to him. The police are not convinced with the information given by the accused. The investigation is on and interrogation will continue," the police commissioner said.

He said the management of Pragathi College did not verify Mahesh's background before appointing him as an attender. "The accused has been working at Pragathi College as an attender and also at hostel for two years. He used to bring some eatables and medicines for the girls whenever there is a need. He used to work as a bell boy at the hostel. On Tuesday, he has assigned this job to other person and went upstairs and indulged in shooting spree," he said.

Asked whether police are contemplating to take action against Pragathi College management for not verifying Mahesh’s background before appointing him as an attender, he said: “We have booked a case against Som Singh, the owner of the college, under Section 188 of IPC," he said.

The injured girl is "out of danger" and is being treated at a private hospital.

Describing it as "an unfortunate incident", Home Minister KJ George, who visited the college, said the two students were at the hostel last night when the attender "shot at one girl and has killed her."

Woman Sarpanch Hacked to Death by Brother for Performing Mother's Last Rites

Geeta Verma, the Sarpanch who was killed by her brother for performing her mother's last rites

Raipur: On Tuesday, Geeta Verma, the head of a village in Chhattisgarh, performed the funeral of her mother, boldly defying tradition to fulfill a last wish.

Two days later, the 44-year-old Sarpanch was hacked to death by her brother.

Santosh Verma took an axe to his sister, furious that she had usurped his role in performing their mother's last rites.

"It was my job to perform the last rites of my mother, how could she do it? I have no regrets," Santosh, completely unrepentant, told reporters.

Geeta, her older sister Sita and some other women relatives were walking to a village pond for post-cremation rituals when they were attacked by Santosh and his son Piyush, 25.

Geeta died instantly; her sister Sita was wounded while trying to save her.

The attackers were caught by villagers and handed over to the police.

Years ago, Santosh had reportedly abandoned his 85-year-old mother, who then came to live with Geeta.

"On 31st March she died and Geeta performed her last rites, which was unacceptable to Santosh and so he killed her," said a police officer, CD Tandon.

The incident, which took place in a village just 40 km from state capital Raipur, reflects a mindset that does not recognize women as equals, said former IPS officer Kiran Bedi.

"It is a mentality where the girl is not given the rights of boys. We need a whole revolutionary form of education which is not visible in our society," said Ms Bedi, who joined the BJP earlier this year.

We just had a revolution less than a year ago during the Loksabha election, no need for another revolution so soon, and definitely not for a utopian Gaddafi Jamahiri.

No you don't get it. He wants to learn the lessons from these incidents in India to launch a revolution in Lybia or his home village in Pakistan.

We just had a revolution less than a year ago during the Loksabha election

that was no revolution... that was the sad victory of the same kind of anti-humans who caused the crimes in the op.

and definitely not for a utopian Gaddafi Jamahiri.

It's unfortunate how both the women were killed. The reaction of lady sarpanch's brother after killing her was shocking, he shows no sign of remorse.
I don't believe in revolution because each revolution is followed by a period of confusion and dismay.
I see education as the only way forward.

This thread reminds me of @Koovie 's post on @Hindustani78 's thread (about law against witch hunting in Rajasthan) that it came 100yrs late. It's shocking to know that interiors of India 're still haunted by such evils.

@jamahir : I read the title and opened the thread thinking about some political murders and it turned out to be the case of psychos. I too had the feelings similar to other posters and naturally thanked them for saving me from commenting. I may not be a Modi supporter but he has the support of the majority of my nation and since I support democracy, I support the verdict of my country. I am used to thinking freely and i am used to getting labled a sanghi, pakistani, jihadi, sickular, feminist, nationalist etc.

According to The Hindu.

Addressing a press conference at Pavagada in Tumakuru district on Thursday, Ms. Rajeshwari, Gautami’s aunt, alleged that though the school management takes fees amounting to lakhs of rupees, the school failed to provide safety to the students, especially girls.

You are late by a year.

now go to Libya and search for head of Gaddafi .

It's shocking to know that interiors of India 're still haunted by such evils.

the hostel murder happened in bangalore, india's "it capital'.

I see education as the only way forward.

education?? bangalore ( the scene of the first crime ) has the highest number of colleges in any city in india, and india has the highest number of colleges in the world.

the idea of education is so wrongly understood in india.

i am used to getting labled a sanghi, pakistani, jihadi, sickular, feminist, nationalist etc.

i am surprised. :coffee:

I may not be a Modi supporter but he has the support of the majority of my nation

and that majority also doesn't accept the abolishing of interest-upon-loans that is core part of islam... not adopting this abolishing has lead to much of india's crimes, like farmer suicides, "honor killings" and student suicides.

you should renounce islam and reject socialism.

I support the verdict of my country. I am used to thinking freely

those two statements cancel out each other.

Stop commenting on my religion, everything else is debatable.
I may not agree with a political ideology but why should I reject it? I believe in democracy where everyone has a right to think and speak freely.

I used to hear chidren being sacrifised by tantrik when I was a kid.. now its very rare... society takes time to evolve.
revolution will sweep away whatever good we have..in addition to bad...besides what if revolutionaries themselves turn out to be corrupt ****oles as is normal after few year.
