KARACHI: Two Military Police (MP) official were killed on Tuesday after their vehicle was fired upon by unidentified gunmen near Tibet Centre on MA Jinnah road.

Senior medico-legal officer (MLO) Dr Nisar Shah of Civil Hospital said one of the military personnel, Rashid, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The second, Arshad, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Arshad was a Havildar while Rashid was a Lance Naik with the Pakistan Army's Military Police.

AIG Mushtaq Meher told Dawn that two Military Police personnel were fired at by masked gunmen. A 9mm pistol was used in the attack, he said.

DIG South Dr Jamil told journalists that the two masked attackers opened indiscriminate fire on the military jeep and fled the scene. He confirmed that only two military personnel were present in the vehicle at the time of attack.

The police official said that four to five bullet casings had also been collected from the scene.

The two attackers, riding motorcycles, immediately fled the scene, which is near the Preedy Police Station, said eye witnesses.

The area was partially sealed.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has taken notice of the attack, ordering an immediate investigation. Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Hyder Jamali also visited the site of the attack.

The Pakistan Army Military Police (MP) is the law-enforcement branch of the army and are responsible for maintaining law and order with in the army. All branches of the armed forces have their own branch of police.

MA Jinnah road is a major artery of the metropolis and is usually congested during the day.

Karachi operation
An ‘operation’ against criminal elements in Pakistan’s commercial hub was initiated back in September 2013 after the federal cabinet empowered Rangers to lead a targeted advance with the support of police against criminals already identified by federal military and civilian agencies for their alleged involvement in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism in Karachi.

A high-level apex committee meeting chaired by the Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif on May 14, 2015 decided to implement effective policing and surveillance in the "vast suburbs of Karachi", to prevent what the military spokesperson said were "sneaking terrorist attacks".

Amid resentment and criticism from certain political circles over the ‘Karachi operation’, the military establishment in August said that there would be no let-up in actions by law enforcement agencies “to ensure a peaceful and terror-free Karachi”.

The Ops areas are generally ripe for all kind of miscreant activities and enemy agencies take full advantage of that. But this I tell you is going to backfire for all of them

Yes, tough times! but we will prevail Allah willing

Killers for hire, literally anyone can hire target killers in Karachi. The ones who attack Army must have been well trained ones or got nothing to lose because when Army finds them, they are dead for sure.

yeah attacking Army in Karachi is something big , i doubt MQM will do that , or even dare to .. if they did such stupidity they will lose a huge amount of Support from People .. cause Karachi people like all other Pakistani's have soft corner for Army .. but i am thinking that this incident might be a work to try stop the local body elections , PTI and Jamati are trying their best to turn the voters of Karachi from MQM but i doubt they will getting any extra support ..
Karachi people have known Jamati from years and they know what kind of sick religious scum bags they are .. and after what happen in Karachi University , many young people are against the Jamat ..

MQM have surprisingly win in Hydrabad and other interior sindh , which may have ring many bells in Sindh govt and our establishment , despite MQM been Targeted , Accused and squeezed to the core by rangers , they still got a lot of support .. MQM is trying to play the Victim card here , i must say :D

this incident is serious in a sense that the dead soldiers were Army Police , and i am sure Army wont leave it easily ..
and as for Rented Target killers i agree, when you have city that huge with population of almost 20 million , with every Political party having militant wings, with tons of Qabaili , thousands of Uzbeks and Tajiks ... finding a rented killer wont be hard ..

If it is(which I highly doubt) it will be the death of MQM period.

If MQM has done something that Stupid right before Election , they are Fcuked ..but as i said MQM does not need to do any of these things , they already enjoy a huge support in Karachi and Hydrabad ..

As you said, the sindh gov might want to delay elections but they won't do this type of stupidity. I think its TTP and their splinters. To make their presence felt.

RIP to the shaheeds. May ALLAH grant them a place in heaven. It could be MQM but attacking the military directly is just too much even for them and it could have serious repercussions... If its a splinter cell or ttp then they will without a doubt take responsibility to showcase their presence which means we will know soon enough if its some terror group trying to show themselves strong.... It could be other political parties who might want to delay the local elections but this is pretty extreme for that. Attacking army is a step too far...

One thing is for sure. This will intensify the operation in Karachi against terrorists and gangsters while strengthening NAP and its implementation.
