Two LeT men killed Kashmir BJP neta, kin: IGP

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: The attack on BJP’s Bandipora district president Waseem Bari was “pre-planned” by two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists, IGP-Kashmir Vijay Kumar said on Thursday, adding that all 10 personal security officers (PSOs) of the politician have been dismissed from service and arrested as well.
Kumar, who on Thursday visited the site of the attack, examined the CCTV footage recorded by a camera at the police station opposite to the slain BJP functionary’s house. “We have checked the CCTV footage in the presence of Army and CRPF officers. Two terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out the attack. One is a local, who has been identified as Abid, and the other is a Pakistani. Abid fired at the trio from close range with a pistol while the other one was guiding him,” he said. “We will track both of them soon and eliminate them,” he added.
The Resistance Force (TRF), an amalgam of LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahedeen (HM) terror outfits, on Thursday claimed responsibility of the killings.
Waseem, his father Sheikh Bashir Ahmad and brother Umar Sheikh were injured when the two militants opened fire on them outside Bari's residence opposite the Bandipora police station at around 9pm. They were taken to Bandipora district hospital where they succumbed to injuries.
“We have analysed the CCTV footage. There was no shortcoming in (providing) security. He had 10 PSOs, two from security wing and eight from district police, which was more than enough. Even if only two PSOs were with him, they would have killed the militant. It is a lapse from our side, our jawans and we are taking action. SSP (Bandipora) has suspended all the 10 PSOs and we are dismissing them from service. They all stand arrested,” he said.
The IGP said Waseem had visited his ward and returned home along with all PSOs. “After entering his house, his PSOs went to their rooms. Waseem then went to his shop on the ground floor of his house where his father and brother were also present. That’s when they were shot,” the IGP Kumar said.
In his various video messages on social media platforms, Waseem had been expressing his commitment on expanding BJP’s footprints in Kashmir Valley. “I will do my best for the expansion of the party through nationalist forces in the valley. This time BJP will win 20-25 seats in Kashmir,” he had said in one of the videos.
On Monday, Waseem had celebrated the 119th birth anniversary of Shayama Prasad Mukherjee. In a video message on facebook, he shared footage of the event and highlighted the importance of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’. His home was decorated with BJP flags.
BJPs J&K president Ravinder Raina, who arrived from Jammu on Thursday, termed the killing a huge loss for the party, “He was a tiger of our party and those who killed him will not be spared.”
Activists of the J&K BJP, its youth wing Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Shiv Sena-Dogra front on Thursday staged protest in Jammu city against the killings. Raising slogans against Pakistan and the terror mentors sitting across the other side, the agitated protestors burnt the effigy of Prime Minister of Pakistan. One of the protestors said, “Pakistan wants to keep the pot boiling in Kashmir. Frustrated by the wind of change in J&K, Pak backed terrorists are now targeting our leaders but it will yield them nothing.”
“This cowardly act will not deter BJP activists from carrying out their pro-people activities in Kashmir Valley,” one of the protestors said.
