Two involved in Deira shooting arrested

The two Iranians involved in the shooting last week have been arrested, Dubai Police said

Two Iranian men who shot an Indian merchant in a robbery attempt in Dubai on Tuesday were arrested on Saturday night, Police announced on Sunday.

The two prepared an escape plan before they attacked the victim in his shop in Baniyas area in Deira and asked him to hand over his money, Lieutenant Colonel Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, said on Sunday.

Major General Khamis Matar Al Muzeinah, Deputy Dubai Police Chief, said the two Iranian suspects monitored a shopkeeper who works for the victim, identified as 21-year-old Hussain Fakhruddin, as he withdrew a large amount of cash from a bank and entered his shop at Al Burj Street where he handed the money to Fakhruddin and went to the upper floor for some work.

The two suspects, meanwhile, entered the shop and attempted to rob it at gunpoint, but when Fakhruddin refused to give them the money, they shot him at pointblank range.

When the shopkeeper heard gunshots downstairs, he rushed there to find the victim injured and bleeding, he told police.

The two suspects disappeared in a few seconds according to their carefully laid plan, Maj Gen Al Muzeinah said, while the victim was rushed to the ICU in hospital with a serious injury.

Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said police set up 23 specialised teams to follow the leads and investigate.

Police found out that the two suspects, who were both staying in the country illegally, were living in a flat in Musalla area in Sharjah. Dubai Police in cooperation with Sharjah Police raided the flat and one suspect was arrested after violent resistance, while the other was arrested in Karama, Dubai. Police also seized the gun and the stolen money.

Fakhruddin earlier told Gulf News that he was shot in the chest by one of the attackers.

“The bullet hit my chest and came out from my back...and I screamed out for help,” Fakhruddin said from Rashid Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

He runs Al Rizq Al Halal trading, which sells hardware. He has been running the shop, owned by his father, for the past few years now, he said. On the day of the shooting, his assistant withdrew Dh160,000 from a nearby bank and brought the money to the shop.

Fakhruddin said the two strangers who walked into the shop and pulled a gun at him were speaking in Farsi.
