For instance in 2010, the idea Google leaving China was always sus to me. Excuses by Google mentioning freedom of speech etc seemed unconvincing.

The real goal probably was Google didn't want any potential Han infestation in US big tech and unilaterally leaving China was a nip in the bud. Score 1 for US big tech there
