In retrospect, one wonders, why British wanted only two dominions coming out of British Raj in South Asia...
Eventhough, then, Muslims wanted a separate homeland, which is an answer to if it were a singular entity coming out of Raj... So, let's analyze what if all the disparate ethno-linguistic groups had been allotted their very own state... Even if Muslims and Hindus had demanded a separate religious homeland, Hindu Rashtra wouldn't have encompassed all of current state called India. A very odd boundary stretching from parts of UP, current state of Haryana, Rajasthan and little else... because Gujarat makes a strong case for a state on it's own and So does Maharashtra and states in the south, northeast etc...
British by allowing a seemingly secular multi-ethnic state made Hindutva dream come true which would never and could never have been achieved. Indian secular state had an expansionist policy from the beginning by usurping states in and around it into its dominion. Today, by democratic process hindu fascists are contemplating what probably many in 1947 had no clue.
