Thirty-five-year-old Turkish shepherd Mustafa Ülker, who crossed to the Armenian side of the border to retrieve a lost sheep, was shot dead by Armenian soldiers patrolling the border, Kars Governor Eyüp Tepe said on Thursday.

Ülker illegally crossed into Armenia from the Arpaçay district of Kars on Wednesday when he realized that a sheep from his herd had crossed the border. According to reports, Armenian soldiers opened fire on the shepherd without giving a warning.

“The Armenian side wants to return the body. Our brigade's assistant commander and the district governor are at the border. We will most likely receive our citizen's body through the east gate. We could say that there was excessive use of force involved considering that he [Ülker] did not have a gun in his hands,” said Tepe.

“We are continuing to have talks with Armenian officials. This [shooting incident] is one the problems that we sometimes face at our borders,” added Tepe.

Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in solidarity with Azerbaijan after the Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan in 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In 2009, the Zurich Protocols were signed between Armenia and Turkey to normalize relations; however, the move did not bear fruit as the border remains closed.

The mass killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottomans in 1915, referred to as a genocide by Armenians, is an issue that strains ties between the two countries. Turkey categorically denies the charges of genocide, saying that there were deaths on both sides when Armenians revolted against the Ottoman Empire in collaboration with the Russian army and invaded Eastern Anatolia to gain independence.

Coincidence or on purpose? Few days ago few Azerbaijani guards were shot at and killed.

That's all Armenia seems to be able to do - shoot unarmed Turkish shepherd's. And AKP wanted to open a border with them?!

Meanwhile, in Turkey, there are over 60,000 illegal citizens of Armenia who are working as construction workers, nannies and prostitutes. Turkey should deport them back to their home country, instead of taking jobs that can be filled by others.

The sad part is, they had right to shoot when that shepherd crossed line. And don't get me wrong i'm not saying they have done the right thing by shooting, they should have just apprehend him instead of shooting.

Syria made the same exact thing by shooting our jet when it crossed their border. It's not a wise thing to do which will fuel the anger of Turks. And we are all seeing the result of the actions of Syria. Same with the Armenia. They shouldn't push their luck and test the patience of Turkey. The only possible outcome, will end bad for them.

you're right....

And welcome, to our Bosnian brother.

Don't say that.

Our grandpa's grandpa's grandpa's lived together peacefully. Why we can't do it ?

When the other side accuses you of with something which you have not committed, its hard to live together..

Its funny tho, once in a while some Turks here and there chant for peace, love and unicorns, rainbows while at the other side of the border, people burn Turkish flags

I disagree. Just politics. People don't hate people...it's all years of political influence.

Is Armenia militarily superior to Azerbaijan? Why don't the Azeris secede part of the Syunik province of Armenia for an access to its Nakhchivan region? If successful would such a venture be strategically advantageous for Turkey?

you're right....

If Turkey does that they would call it an ethnic cleansing. Europe can deport all of their illegal immigrants. It is just double standards. IMHO Armenians can stay aslong as they don't commit crime and betray their host country.

Not only that .. I once met Armenian, he wanted whole of east-Turkey plus half of Azerbaijan. I never met such a rude person in my life. After 5 minutes our relationship went downhill after he saying that. haha.

Before WW1, 50% of Armenia was Muslim and there were Mosques. Today's there is not one mosque and there is not one Muslim alive in Armenia but some of our niave friends still talk about rainbows and unicorns. It is so sad. Only Christian death get rememberd.
