Top military chiefs of Turkey, the U.S. and Russia discussed the regional security situation at a meeting in southern Antalya province Tuesday, according to Turkish General Staff.

Chief of Turkish General Staff Hulusi Akar, his U.S. counterpart Joseph Dunford and Russia’s Valery Gerasimov exchanged views on the security situation in the region, particularly on Syria and Iraq, the military said in a statement.

The meeting came ahead of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's two-day visit to Moscow, which is expected to start on Thursday.

The top generals of the Turkish, Russian and US military met Tuesday in a bid to step up coordination in Syria and avoid clashes between rival forces in the fight against IS.

The meeting between Turkish Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford and Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov appears to be the first of its kind.

Their discussions in the southern Turkish city of Antalya come as a US-led coalition is making progress to push the Islamic State group (IS) out of Syria, where Ankara has been increasing its efforts against the jihadists.

Turkey, Russia and the United States are all fighting against IS, though they support different camps and military tension remains because of Turkish opposition to the involvement of Syrian Kurdish militia.

Turkey has said that the next target of its cross-border Syria campaign would be Manbij, which is now controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a group dominated by Kurdish fighters.

The SDF has controlled Manbij since last year when it pushed out IS, but recently it has clashed with Turkish-backed forces.

"Common issues relating to regional security, in particular Syria and Iraq, are being discussed at the meeting," the Turkish army said in a statement, without giving further detail.

Antalya has previously hosted several NATO meetings, as well as the G20 summit in 2015.

Moscow confirmed the meeting, with the defence ministry saying in a statement to Russian news agencies: "A joint discussion on security issues in Syria and Iraq is planned."

The Antalya talks are aimed at ensuring better coordination to avoid "the risk of unwanted clashes" as many countries are involved in Syria, the Turkish premier said.

- 'Common threat: terror' -

Speaking in Ankara, Yildirim said Syria needed to be rid of "all terrorist groups" including Al-Nusra, Syrian Kurdish militia as well as IS jihadists.

"The objective of the meetings today and tomorrow (Wednesday) is how to provide coordination in the best way possible and prevent parties from interfering with each other's operations and cause unpleasant developments while fighting against terror," Yildirim said.

"Naturally terror elements are a common threat and spoil peace and (the possibility of) political solution in Syria."

The trilateral meeting in Antalya comes a day after Turkey stepped back from threats to unilaterally strike Kurdish militia deployed in Manbij.

"It makes no sense to launch an operation in Manbij without the cooperation of Russia and the United States," Yildirim said in a televised interview late on Monday.

His announcement stood in stark contrast to previous threats from Ankara that it would hit Syrian Kurdish militia -- considered "terrorists" by Turkey -- unless they withdrew from Manbij.

However on Tuesday Yildirim criticised some allies' "unfortunate" choice of Kurdish militia linked to separatist rebels in Turkey as partners against terror groups.

The Pentagon said it has sent extra troops into northern Syria to make sure competing forces in and around Manbij remain focused on fighting IS rather than each other.

- Erdogan to meet Putin -

Ankara has conducted a military campaign inside Syria since late August, backing Syrian opposition fighters and recapturing from IS several towns near its border including Jarabulus, Al-Rai, Dabiq and Al-Bab.

Says a German from Bild...

Nobody ready for WW3, they have to work with Turkey for common interests at our region.

Would you please mention about those ''common interests'' which you think this meeting is about?

Nobody dont gonna give whole cake to anybody also nobody ready for WW3 at this time. So everybody has to make logical decisions at Syria and discuss on common interests.

You do not even know what you are talking about, do you?

The same rhetoric was identically used by Mr. Zero Davutoğlu, look at what we are now; yet still used by the same ones and party.

USA,Russia,Assad,YPG get together and cornered Turkey in Syria, also 4 million Syrians in Turkey; however, Some people still sell ''We are mighty, so they have to work with us for common interests''.

I sometimes wonder who is really the enemy of Turkey.

As you said they are working together and prefer PYD forces instead Strengthening of the Turkey, we already know that. so were you thinking that we would sit at the chair and watching story until end ?

Turkey done operation for hold back their future plan at Syria, so we stopped them at Albab, then Desperately they had to support PYD at Manbij, Turkey still has rights according to International law but they have trouble according to int.law because they supporting terrorist organization.

Russia/Iran/America still didnt get what they want at Syria, they had trouble with Turkey's policy and they have to be work with us to finalize Syrian war. This is so Obvious.

If you think that Turkey is not successfuly what you gonna say for Iran, Russia or America, are they successfuly at Syria ?

Even you dont know what is Turkish state's policy at Syria and what is our goals, you are just speaking with western Mouth against your own country.

Then please explain me who is the really enemy of Turkey ?

Dude we are in 2017 but yes Russia does use Orthodox populations to further its goals in 2017.

The question is what will the US and Russian reaction be to Turkey if it launches operation Manbij? I think Turkish relations are more important to them then a city. But again they might agree to put a stop to an active TR foreign policy before it gets out of control and begins to actively interfere in their interests else where.

The decision we make on Manbij is very important in our Republics history, it's similar to Cyprus Op but it seems that the stakes are higher as both powers are directly against us.

The Turkish folks love to fight with the rudest and strongest bullies in the neighborhood. Fighting minnows and declaring 10 different holidays to celebrate "victories" is against their DNA....
