Turkish premier to discuss defence, diplomatic cooperation in Cairo

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was set to hold a series of meetings in Cairo on Tuesday, expected chiefly to focus on military and diplomatic ties between the two countries,DPA reported.

He is scheduled to meet with the head of the ruling military council Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and his Egyptian counterpart Essam Sharaf. He will also give two speeches, the first to the Arab League foreign ministers meeting and another to a group of different Egyptian political figures.

"We will discuss what Turkey can present to Egypt, and what Egypt can present to Turkey, in order to enhance international cooperation between the two of us," Erdogan told the Egyptian satellite channel Dream on Monday.

The Turkish prime minister, who heads a delegation of six ministers, was received by Sharaf at the airport late Monday, and was cheered by thousands of people, many of whom where from the Muslim Brotherhood.

People were chanting "Turkey and Egypt are one hand" and "Erdogan, Erdogan, big greetings from the Brotherhood."

Erdogan is currently seen as a hero by many Egyptians after cutting all diplomatic relations and freezing military and trade ties with Israel the previous week over last year's killing of nine Turkish activists aboard a Gaza-bound ship meant to deliver humanitarian to the Palestinian population.

Erdogan started off his visit to Egypt on Tuesday as part of a tour of North African Arab countries.
