Turkish vehicle manufacturer Nurol Makina will wrap up qualification trials of its new NMS 4x4 vehicle early next year as it pursues initial customers for the vehicle in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Speaking to Shephard at Gulf Defense and Aerospace in Kuwait, Emre Akin, strategic planning and market development director at Nurol Makina, said the end of qualification trials next year will be followed by further field tests and blast tests for the vehicle.

‘We already have a couple of countries interested in this vehicle,’ said Akin.

He added that production could start as early as Q2 2018 if a customer is secured and that initial vehicles would be delivered by the end of the year.

Akin did not disclose any customers for the new vehicle, however on 11 December a photo appeared on social media suggesting that the vehicle may have found a buyer. In it, two NMS vehicles are being transported by trailer, with one equipped with Aselsan’s Missile-Igla launching system for air defence and another with the anti-tank missile launching system, also from Aselsan.

The photo shows both vehicles painted in a two-tone sand coloured camouflage, which might suggest a North African or Middle Eastern customer.

Akin declined to comment on the photo.

According to Nurol Makina technical data, the NMS weighs 10t with a payload capacity of 2t. Additional armour plates provided by sister company Nurol Technologies can be added, bringing protection up to STANAG Level 4 levels.

The vehicle’s interior configuration can seat nine personnel in total; five crew in forward-facing seats and four soldiers facing each other at the rear.

The vehicle utilises a Cummins turbocharged 300hp diesel engine, along with an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission and axles from AxleTech. This allows for gradients of 70% to be climbed and can propel the vehicle to speeds of up to 140km/h and gives it a range of 700km.

The ‘modular’ NMS 4x4 was first unveiled at IDEF 2017 in Istanbul and has since gone through testing with two prototypes; one with a military-grade chassis and the other with a commercially-available chassis.

Akin said that the vehicle will come with a military spec chassis as standard, but customers could opt for the commercial variant if required.

Nurol Makina also manufacture the Ejder Yalçin 4x4, a 14t vehicle that has found success in the domestic security market and now in the military domain, with Turkey, Uzbekistan and Tunisia all confirmed as customers.

Nurol’s facility in Turkey currently has capacity to produce up to 50 vehicles a month across its portfolio, but expansion could be on the cards in the future depending on orders.

Two Turkish-made armored vehicles bested their foreign rivals in performance tests held in Slovakia on Thursday, according to Turkish defense sources.

The tests were done to allow the Slovak army to see the performance of the Ejder Yalçın and Cobra II vehicles, which it may add its inventory, according to the sources, who asked not to be named due to confidentiality concerns.

Slovakian Defense Minister Peter Gajdos and top military officials observed the tests.

As part of a project to supply four-wheel drive armored vehicles, 10 armored vehicles from Turkey as well as Germany, France, Canada, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, and Slovakia were run through trials on a test track.

The Ejder Yalçın — co-produced by Nurol Machine and FNSS — and Cobra II — made by Otokar — were the Turkish competitors.

When the vehicles showed off their skills on the track, the Turkish duo excelled in power, endurance and mobility tests, said the sources.

The Slovak army is planning to modernize its equipment over the next decade, including new four-wheeled combat vehicles. Slovakia is expected to add hundreds of armored vehicles to its inventory.

Thanks to their successful tests, the Turkish combat vehicles are reportedly front-runners in the procurement process, added the sources.

Defense firm to export hundreds of armored vehicles, defense industry products to Qatar
The Turkish defense industry is set to carry out comprehensive armored vehicle sales to Qatar. Within the scope of the contract signed by Turkish defense industry firm Nurol Makina Sanayi (NMS) to satisfy the needs of the Qatar Armed Forces, hundreds of armored vehicles as well as many defense industry products will be exported for the first time.

According to information received from defense industry sources, Nurol, a Turkish armored land vehicle manufacturer, has had successful results for the defense industry in contract negotiations with Qatar.

Within the scope of the contract, approximately 400 Ejder Yalçın 4x4 armored combat vehicles produced by Nurol, as well as more than a hundred NMS 4x4 light armored vehicles, which were launched with an ambitious slogan, "A New Era Starts in Light Armored Vehicles," at the 13th International Defense Industry Fair last May, will be exported.

Ejder Yalçın armored combat vehicles, which were exported to Tunisia for the first time in March, continued its export success after a memorandum of understanding was signed with Uzbekistan on the direct procurement of 24 vehicles and the joint production of 1,000 others.

On the other hand, NMS 4x4s will be exported for the first time seven months after its launching, being on the defense inventory of a country for the first time.

Qatari procurement authorities negotiated with Nurol on Ejder Yalçın 4x4 armored combat vehicles. At the same time, they received information about NMS vehicles, and following assessments, they decided to include both vehicles in their inventory.Ejder Yalçın and NMS vehicles, which were displayed in rehearsals for Qatar National Day events for the first time with desert camouflage, will be disclosed at the military parade organized in the event.

Meanwhile, Nurol authorities left questions about the issue unanswered.

Various weapon systems to be placed on the vehicles are also firsts in terms of exports carried out by ASELSAN, the Turkey defense electronic systems producer.

SARP-DUAL, one of the recent members of ASELSAN's Remote Controlled Weapon System, which is used in 14 countries and by security forces along with hedgehog vehicles in Turkey, will be exported for the first time.

In addition to the main weapons, the SARP-DUAL can be fitted with a 7.62-millimeter machine gun as an auxiliary weapon.

SARP-DUAL, developed by ASELSAN completely domestically at the beginning of the year, is a weapon system capable of applying advanced ballistic solutions, computer-controlled fire control functions, automatic target tracking and shooting in motion. It can be directed manually in battle situations when necessary. The anti-tank missile launcher system, which was last exhibited at the Gulf Defense and Aviation Fair in Kuwait, will have its first export success along with other vehicles.

Designed to minimize user interaction, the system has computer-controlled fire control capability.

Thanks to its modular structure, anti-tank guided missiles like Cornet, Hellfire, Javelin, Shershen and OMTAS can be fired from the tower. RF or laser markers can be placed on the tower according to the guidance system of selected missiles. The number of missiles can be changed according to user requests. In addition to missiles, it is possible to integrate 7.62-milimeter and 12.7-milimeter machine guns and 25-milimeter cannons for providing close protection.

ASELSAN's other products for export will be the IGLA missile launching system, which uses IGLA and IGLA-S as basic weapon and provides effective solution against unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles with computer-controlled, fixed and rotary wing aircrafts. Thanks to its fast and precise target position detection capability, it has shorter reaction time, higher firepower and higher hit performance than MANPADS configurations.

It seemed to me a bit weird in the beginning for Qatar to buy from Nurol meanwhile they had a share in BMC. By time, I saw that this is a strategical move.
