Turkish Engine Programs


From what I understand;

So there are 2 engines at the moment and one of them is called the PD170. Here's what I could gather from the interview ;
  • Both engines are from Turkish origins and designs (meaning we own them).
  • The current one that is close to being manufactured already has 2 flights under it's belt and is going to start mass manufacturing (this engine has no code name that I know of now)
  • This engine is similar in performance and specs to the current ANKA engine (which is an import) and it is a modified civilian engine (that was also developed by Turkey)
  • The PD170 is built from scratch to fit the needs of an UAV and is currently under land testing with 1500 hours already completed
  • The PD170 is going to have better performance and also be more economic to sustain
Have I missed anything / got it wrong?

Is one of them not a modified engine from Thielert or something like that?

The engine that ANKA is using right now is not a national one. Its modified version of Thielert Centurion 2.0 and the modification is done to catch to the requirements for a MALE motor and that engine itself is a modified Mercedes engine. The one that they are developing PD170 will be a national one that will have as you say better performance.

But from what I've read here ( Donanimhaber / Türkiye'de üretilen İHA motoru yurt dışına satılacak - can't link yet sorry) there are 2 variants ;
  • PD155 (modified civilian engine, 9 manufactured and 2 have been given)
  • PD170 (still at land testing phase)
Since we've got around 60 UAV's at the moment then that means the PD155 is also a new engine and from the interview it looks like a Turkish based one?

The original modified Centurion 2.0 have I think 135hp while its certified for 155hp. Maybe the PD155 is further modified Centurion in order to actually catch up to 155hp as in license. The Centurion is certified to use only
Diesel (EN 590), Jet A, Jet A-1 fuels while we see in TEI website that also JP-8 is there. JP-8 is the same as Jet A-1 but with anti corrosion action and have anti ice substances in it that is crucial for UAV's that operate on such high altitude.

I see, bummer then :( I thought for a while that we actually had rights to 2 engines but it seems like only the PD170 is ours and the PD155 is a modified Centurion 2 that can burn JP-8 from what you've said.

Those are only my assumptions. Centurion 2.0 can burn more fuel types than what I wrote including JP-8 but I just wrote the certified ones. I think in the modification from TEI the PD155 is certified to use that fuel and maybe there are more small modifications to make the engine as perfect as possible to ANKA and its requirements. At least PD177 is there and its not bad at all :)

BTW: When I look at our dialogue I feel like I am writing to myself :D :D :D

Critical and maximum altitudes are pretty good for a diesel engine. I hope water cooling does not become a problem at those altitudes. Less than 210 gr/kWh looks good. Do we have any info for the previous ANKA engine for comparision?
