Advanced Jet Trainer & Light Attack Aircraft Development (Hürjet) Project

Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TAI) has recently launched a project named as “Advanced Jet Trainer & Light Attack Aircraft (Hürjet) Project” on 14th of August 2017. It is aimed to develop a jet trainer and light attack aircraft primarily to meet the needs of Turkish Air Force (TurAF) and international market.

The main aim of the Project is to replace existing TurAF T-38 Trainer Aircraft. Hürjet’s Light Attack configuration will share the role of F-16 Aircraft as Lead-in Fighter Trainer and Close Air Support in the 2020's with its 3000 kg payload. Hürjet is expected to be used for Close Air Support, Red Aircraft and Air Policing (or board security and counterterrorism) missions by Turkey and allied countries.

Main objectives of the project are:

  • Fulfillment of the TurAF’s operational, functional and performance requirements regarding jet trainer and light attack aircraft, by designing and developing an indigenous system utilizing readily available technologies to keep the unit and ownership costs low.
  • Replacement of the current TurAF T-38 fleet, consisting of about 70 aircraft. The production volume may increase depending on the “Light Attack Aircraft” needs of TurAF and/or potential customers.
The maximum speed of Hürjet will be Mach 1.2; the maximum altitude will be 45,000 ft. and it will be equipped with modern flight, mission and training systems.

According to info, Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan discuss a joint pilot training concept to share expertise and knowledge among eachothers in near future. Under this concept, Three country is planning to use same training aircrafts to improve joint operation and readiness level of pilots. We will see the results...

Whenever I see the turboprops, I wonder about the optimal location of the engine intake.
@cabatli_53 how is TFX coming along? Will the acquisition of F35 affect it in any way?

A strong turbofan engine(27000lbf) will be selected for TF-X. Negotiations are proceeding with RR and It is planned to be finalized in this year. TEI gave proposal to develop a competitive domestic turbofan engine as well, While RR offers joint development of powerfull engine with a Turkish contractor called KaleAero. Selection of engine will accelerate the TF-X program. F-35 project is not a reason to proceed TF-X project. TF-X has a budget around 30billion $ in order to develop a national stealth fighter jet replacing F-16s to declare aerial independance bases on own industrial capabilities while surpassing enemy/rival activities in region, While F-35 is a ground attack stealth fighter which is going to replace aged F-4 fighters in inventory.

I think it will be better to partner with RR as Turkey lacks experience in fighter jet turbofans.
TEI should still be given money to develop their own engine to build skills.

That's a great news and with Erdogan in power, I'm sure it will continue as a continuation of a policy. RR is one of the most experienced industry leaders when it comes to developing engines for aerospace application. A localised facility with full rights to develop, manufacture and export engines will go a long way in the development of TF-X program aerospace industry in Turkey. We have project Azm so I see the two as sister programs and can benefit a lot from each other in coming years. Wish you best of luck and success for all your endeavours.

Wow it has the longest wing span among all its competitors but the wing area is unknown..speed of 1.2 Mach is also kind of good..somewhere in the middle. KAI T-50 seems to be more similar than the rest which is a good trainer itself.

also it has long nose area, which shows that Turkey actually plan it to use in air to air warfare, as most of others dont plan to put radar there... Turkey also developed its AESA radar, which can be small and cover huge area like normal jets.. Engine is the only question.. I think they might use either f16 engine from USA, or RR engine not to have export difficulties, as it has huge potential.. Azerbaijan deffinitely will be the first customer...

F-16 engine will be too large for this plane.
F-414 or EJ-2000 will be a good fit.

American F100-PW-220 also fits perfect as it has 65 KN

F100-PW-220 is 65KN as specially designed to eliminate stall-stagnations and augmenter instability as well as doubling time between depot overhauls. Reliability and maintenance costs were also drastically improved.
X-47 UCAV also use this engine.. without afterburner.
Ej-2000 has 60KN which i also agree that might be the engine as Turkey has good relations with UK and could also export it..
F414 has 58kn, is a good engine, but will be a totally different engine, as TFX might use RR engine and compatible with Ej-2000 and F100-PW-220 is compatibale with Turkish f16 engines, but F-414 will bring a lot of cost as its new engine. But, choosing F-414 means that Turkey wants to make a Grippen type of aircraft.
I think EJ-2000 has huge chance and good part of it, it can be ubgraded by 30% in the future, to make HURJET a really great aircraft..
