PARIS, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines appears close to making its first purchase of European passenger jets with an order for as many as 100 Airbus A320-family aircraft, sources familiar with the matter said.

The decision to switch suppliers by a fast-growing airline that currently operates only Boeing jets follows a tough contest between the world's two largest planemakers.

Initial negotiations for 50 medium-haul jets between Pegasus and the manufacturers were first reported by Reuters in July and were seen as a flashpoint in one of the fiercest market share battles between Airbus and Boeing for a decade.

Airbus and Pegasus declined to comment on Monday.

If confirmed, the Istanbul-based airline's final purchase could reach as many as 100 aircraft worth more than $9 billion at list prices, the sources said, asking not to be named.

Founded in 1990, Pegasus has grown its fleet from just two aircraft to more than 40 mostly Boeing 737-800s over the past two decades and serves 52 destinations in 24 countries.

Thats great!

Turkish Airlines is already the best in the Europe , and one of the best in the world. I guess it is the largest international airlines in the sense that it flies to the most number of international destinations..(2010 destinations in 93 different countries)...right or wrong?

A320 is the BEST aircraft for short operations...good choice!

May Turkey continue to prosper..ameen!

Apparently more than close!

Airbus: Pegasus selects up to 100 A320neo Family Aircraft

Pegasus’s order is valued at $12 billion including the options, Airbus said today, with the Istanbul-based carrier firmly committed to buying 58 A320neos and 17 larger A321neos (+with options for 25 more). Deliveries will begin in three years and run through 2022.

Pegasus’s A320neos will be configured in all-economy layout featuring 180 seats, with 220 on the A321s, and used on routes in Europe and the Middle East, according to the carrier.

"The A320neo with its 15% fuel burn reduction combined with superior cabin comfort made it without a doubt the best choice for achieving our ambitious future development plans," Pegasus Chairman Ali Sabanci said in a statement.

Pegasus, which flies to 61 destinations in 24 countries, has grown six-fold since its 2005. While passenger traffic in Turkey has expanded by 15% in 2011, Pegasus has grown by 41%, according to Istanbul-based Esas Holding.
