ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that the purchase of S-400 defense systems from Russia was a done deal, adding that Ankara would also jointly produce S-500 defense systems with Moscow.

U.S. officials have called Turkey’s planned purchase of the S-400 missile defense system “deeply problematic,” saying it would risk Ankara’s partnership in the joint strike fighter F-35 program because it would compromise the jets, made by Lockheed Martin Corp.

However, Erdogan told a televised question and answer session with university students in Istanbul that Turkey had carried out technical work and found that such a problem did not exist.

“They (the U.S.) are passing the ball around in the midfield now, showing some reluctance. But sooner or later, we will receive the F-35s. (The U.S.) not delivering them is not an option.”

I have a feeling that Turkey might not get those F-35s, the Trump administration seems to be quite aggressive.
Having that said, this will Steer Turkey even more towards TAI TFX program, USA certainly wont appreciate yet another 5th gen competitor.

and If USA doesnt give F-35 to Turkey, that'll surely be it for the military relations and US influence in that area because Turkey really did invest heavily in that Program and Turkey deserves its due share.

It's obvious that Turkey will get the F-35.

Losing Turkey to Russia would be an absolute disaster for the US in the Mid East. Especially when Iran is yet to be dealt with.
Hardly a disaster. Russia and Turkey only have tactical relation and it will never be a full fledged alliance. Russia does not forget how Turkey downed its plane and then further antagonised by Erdogan stating that Russia must apologise for airspace violation!! Only because of the coup attempt Erdogan turned against USA and Russia sees through such selfishness. S500 joint manufacturing is simply ruled out as Russia does not trust Turkey.

So, F35 sale is not linked to Russia but whether USA finds it safe to handover such high end technology to Turkey or not.

Turkey has no real investment in the project. It is only involved in commercial manufacturing of simple parts like fuselage etc for which it has got technology from USA. It just makes them to get jobs and foreign exchange. Turkey by itslef has not invested any R&D money for F35

You are completely wrong on this, Russia wants to get Turkey in its camp and had offered joint manufacturing of not only S500 but also Su57.

United Kingdom is the sole "Level 1" partner, contributing US$2.5 billion, which was about 10% of the planned development costs under the 1995 Memorandum of Understanding that brought the UK into the project. Level 2 partners are Italy, which is contributing US$1 billion; and the Netherlands, US$800 million. Level 3 partners are Turkey, US$195 million; Canada US$160 million; Australia, US$144 million; Norway, US$122 million and Denmark, US$110 million. Israel and Singapore have joined as so-called "security cooperative participants" (SCP).

S-500 is not for export, and joint production is out of question.

That joint production might just be assembly of parts which is not really development or manufacturing. Assembly is just about joining 2 parts with nuts, bolts and electronic connectors. It is not meaningful at all. Russia is not giving even S300 IP to countries like China but expecting Russia to give any S500 technology to Turkey is unreasonable.

The $195 million has already been recovered by sales of parts for over 300 F35 built till date. So, there is no loss for turkey in the invested money even if USA withdraws from Turkey's manufacturing partnership.

It's never as simple as you have stated though. The problem for Turkey is the US and Turks are not seeing eye-to-eye on the Kurds. And the Kurds are an immediate threat to Turkey than Russia is.

So while the US wants Turkey as a counterweight to Russia, the US wants the Turks to lay off the Kurds. This situation is the same as what we have seen between US and India about China and Pakistan.

Also, the S-500 joint production is simply license production. I don't see why Russia would be averse to that.

S-500 is not for export, and joint production is out of question.

They will eventually make an export version, like they did with the S-400.

I am talking in Russian viewpoint, not Turkish viewpoint. Turkey may consider Russia as better than USA. But Russia has no long term benefit from Turkey relations. So, Russia don't see Turkey as trustworthy. So, Russia would not like to give away military equipments to Turkey as it may be used against Russia itself one day.
